Walmart is not only the biggest retailer in the United States but the largest in the world. Global sales for Walmart in 2022 were over $600 billion. While Walmart’s headquarters are located in Bentonville, AR, the company employs approximately 2.1 million people worldwide in 19 countries.
Note that many stores in places outside of the U.S. may go by different names. It’s been Walmart’s business strategy to acquire pre-existing discount stores and oftentimes retain the original name. Read on for the 19 countries that have Walmart in 2024.
1. United States
Walmart is the biggest retailer in the U.S. With 5,215 retail units and $499.65 billion in retail sales, Walmart tops other large retailers such as Amazon and Costco. Walmart began in Arkansas in 1962, and its headquarters are still in the state. In the U.S., Walmart operates supercenters, discount stores, neighborhood markets, small formats, and Sam’s Club.
2. Mexico
After the U.S., Walmart’s second largest market is in Mexico, with 2,914 retail units. In fact, Mexico was the first country where Walmart ventured outside of the U.S. The first store in Mexico was a Sam’s Club, which opened in Mexico City in 1991. Today, aside from Walmart Supercenters and Walmart Express, Walmart also owns and operates the popular discount store, Bodega Aurrera.
3. Canada
Walmart entered the Canadian market in 1994 and operates 403 retail units today. With its headquarters in Mississauga, Ontario, the company runs 344 Walmart Supercentres and 59 Walmart Discount Stores. With a revenue in 2022 of 24.4 billion, it’s the country’s fifth-largest retailer.
4. Chile
Walmart entered the Chilean market in 2009 when the company acquired a majority in Chile’s leading food retailer, Distribución y Servicio D&S S.A. With its headquarters in Santiago, the company operates 393 retail units under several different names, including Superbodega Acuenta, Lider Express, Lider Hiper, and Central Mayorista.
5. China
In 1996, Walmart opened its first retail store in the Chinese market. The first store was a hypermarket and Sam’s Club in Shenzhen. Walmart China often leads the way with new technologies, including a smartphone app mini-program and Cloud Depots, which provide prompt delivery service to remote areas.
6. Costa Rica
In 2005, Walmart entered the Costa Rican market. Today, its headquarters are in San Jose, Costa Rica. Known as Walmart Centroamerica, the company owns and operates 308 retail units under several different names, including Walmart Supercenters, Mas x Menos, Maxi Pali, and Pali.
7. South Africa
Walmart came to South Africa in 2011 when the company acquired a majority stake in Massmart Holdings Ltd. With this purchase, Walmart now owns and operates 286 retail units in the country under various names. Some of the retail stores include Builders Express, Cash and Carry, Jumbo, and Game. Recently, Walmart made a deal to buy full ownership of Massmart.
8. Guatemala
Walmart’s 263 retail units in Guatemala are under Walmart Centroamerica. Walmart entered the market in Guatemala in 2006 and today owns and operates Despensa Familiar, Maxi Despensa, Paiz, and Walmart Supercenters within the country.
9. Honduras
In 2005, Walmart entered the Honduras market. Today, the company owns and operates 113 retail units under the following names: Despensa Familiar, Maxi Despensa, Paiz, and Walmart Supercenter. Small farmers sell fresh produce to local supermarkets, such as Paiz. Supermarkets are growing in popularity in the region because customers know the company has high standards for fresh produce and will not sell food that tests positive for bacteria or is high in pesticides.
10. El Salvador
Walmart in El Salvador is under the Walmart Centroamerica umbrella. The company owns and operates 102 retail units in the country, including Despensa Familiar, La Despensa de Don Juan, Maxi Despensa, and Walmart Supercenters.
11. Nicaragua
In Nicaragua, Walmart owns and operates 102 retail units under the following names: Walmart Supercenters, La Union, Maxi Pali, and Pali.
12. India
Walmart doesn’t have a huge brick-and-mortar presence in India, but it does run 26 retail units under the name Best Price Modern Wholesale. However, Walmart’s big push in India is digital commerce. In 2018, the company acquired India’s largest e-commerce firm, Flipkart, which competes with Amazon India.
13. Botswana
Walmart entered the Botswana market with its acquisition of Massmart in 2011. Today, the company has ten stores in Botswana under the names Game, Builders Warehouse, and Cash and Carry.
14. Zambia
Through the acquisition of Massmart, Walmart owns and operates seven retail units in Zambia. However, you won’t find the Walmart name anywhere in the country. These stores go by the names, Game, Builders Warehouse, Jumbo, and Builders Express.
15. Mozambique
Though there are only five retail stores in Mozambique, Walmart does have a presence there. Mozambique is known for its long and luxurious coastline along the Indian Ocean. The stores under Massmart in Mozambique include two Builders Warehouses, two Game stores, and one Builders Express. These retail units sell general merchandise, home improvement items, foods, and liquor.
16. Namibia
The coastal country of Namibia is home to a diverse amount of wildlife, including a significant cheetah population. Walmart stores in Namibia are under the Massmart brand, including four Game retail units and one Cash and Carry. Game sells electronics, appliances, other merchandise, food, and liquor, while Cash and Carry offers fresh food products for cash.
17. Lesotho
Lesotho is a small, high-altitude, landlocked kingdom that is bordered on all sides by South Africa. Lesotho’s land is made up of rivers and mountain ranges. Walmart owns three stores here, one Game and two Cash and Carry’s.
18. Malawi
Malawi‘s landlocked, small country borders Mozambique, Zambia, and Tanzania. There are two Walmart-owned retail units in Malawi under the Game brand. The population is over 18 million, and the industry in the country is primarily agricultural.
19. Eswatini
The small country of Eswatini is located in Southern Africa. Formerly called Swaziland, today it is officially the Kingdom of Eswatini. This rural country suffers from severe poverty and unemployment. There is one Walmart store in Eswatini called CBW.
