On August 18, 2023, Blue Beetle was released in the United States. Don’t let its name fool you, though; few beetles are in the film. Instead, the movie is based on a DC character by the same name. While the movie is in Palmera City, it’s filmed in different spots. Palmera City is a made-up city in the DC universe. So, if not Palmera City, then where? Follow along to discover where ‘Blue Beetle’ was filmed.

What is ‘Blue Beetle’ About?

Before we dive into where Blue Beetle was filmed, let’s discuss the plot! Spoilers ahead, so read at your discretion.

The film Blue Beetle follows Jaime Reyes, a recent graduate from Gotham Law University. While home, Jamie decides to stay and help his family as they face an eviction. While this happens, Victoria Kord and her team find the Scarab, an ancient alien artifact. Victoria wants to use the artifact for her One Man Army Corps (OMAC) projects.

In a strange turn of events, Jamie looks for a job at Kord Industries. When there, he is told to keep a Big Belly Burger to-go box hidden and safe by Jenny, who disagrees with Victoria’s use of the artifact. Can you guess what was hidden within this box? If you thought the Scarab, you’re right!

Jamie touches the artifact, which latches onto him, encasing him in thick, intelligent armor. In other words, the Scarab willingly chose Jamie to be a host. Throughout the film, Jamie, his family, and Jenny hide from and fight Victoria and her dangerous team, who want the artifact back.

You may have noticed some familiar spots if you’ve watched the film Blue Beetle. Blue Beetle was filmed in El Paso, Texas, Puerto Rico, Florida, and parts of Georgia, including Atlanta and Decatur.

At the start of the movie, Jamie lands back home. His family is waiting for him at the airport, but is this an airport? No. Instead, this scene was filmed at the Puerto Rico Convention Center in San Juan.

So, what about Jamie and his family’s home? The home was built and filmed at the Wilder Studios in Decatur. Other scenes were filmed in Miami, mostly CGI-filled scenes. This makes sense, considering Palmera City is based off of Miami.

What about the end of the movie? Anyone from Puerto Rico probably instantly recognized the Castillo San Felipe del Morro in the fight sequence set on the Caribbean island of Pago.

Wildlife in Filming Locations

Although the film Blue Beetle didn’t have much to do with animals, diving into the creatures that call the filming locations home is still interesting. Follow along to discover some wildlife you may see in the filming spots.

Puerto Rico

The cast of Blue Beetle spent a few months filming in many parts of Puerto Rico, particularly in San Juan. There are so many animals to see in this area! For instance, although invasive, a common species in Puerto Rico is iguanas, also called gallina de palos. Another iconic Puerto Rican animal is the coqui. Technically, though, there are at least 16 species native to this Caribbean island. If you’re visiting San Juan, visit the Parque de las Palomas, also known as the Pigeon Park. This unique park is filled with pigeons that you can feed. If you do this, though, remember that you shouldn’t feed pigeons outside the park.

El Paso, Texas

So, what about the animals in El Paso? Some animals that you can find in El Paso are whitetail deer, mule deer, white-winged doves, house finches, gray foxes, Texas toads, and eastern-collared lizards. You can see these animals when visiting El Paso’s beautiful parks and hiking trails.

Georgia

Georgia is another state where there are many animals. For instance, the state is home to hundreds of animal species, including at least 400 bird species. Specific animals in this vibrant southern state include turkey vultures, eastern bluebirds, North American river otters, green anoles, black bears, and marine animals like stingrays, jellyfish, and whales.

Miami

Generally, people who visit Miami don’t travel to this gorgeous and lively city to see animals, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t incredible wildlife. Some animals you can encounter in this large city include American alligators, great blue herons, Cuban tree frogs, marsh rabbits, bottlenose dolphins, and brown watersnakes.
