Whenever we hear the term “wild,” we probably imagine some vicious animal in the open plains of Africa that could tear the flesh of an animal’s body. However, they aren’t always able to do that. Even though these wild dogs have that name, they quickly learned today that even though they had the numbers, they were not able to right these massive elephants.

Fierce Protection

The next YouTube video posted at the bottom of this blog post looks like it comes from Africa, given the surrounding landscape and the animals present. This video was uploaded by the YouTube page Caters Clips. This channel is dedicated to providing clips from verified user-generated content, according to their mission. They share a short description of what happened in the video below.

“These wild dogs learned the hard way to not mess with elephants when a massive group of them emerged from the bushes to protect a baby elephant.”

Pack of Wild Dogs Vs. Elephants

African wild dogs can run up to 45 miles per hour.

At the start of this video, posted at the very bottom, shows us two large elephants, with a baby elephant called a calf, traveling behind. Not far up ahead, we see a group of almost a dozen wild dogs. The second that they see this young calf, they know this is the perfect meal. This calf would be easy to take down and would fill these small wild dogs up. However, they just have two obstacles in their way, two very large obstacles.

During the video, we see their descriptions of events, and it’s in Spanish. We have translated their description below into English.

“These elephants will do whatever it takes to protect their young. Even if it means facing a pack of wild dogs. Finally, the wild dogs learned their lesson the hard way. And the elephants managed to protect their calf.”

As the elephants approach, the adult elephants take the lead to “attack” first. They stomp and give a loud trumpet toward the wild dogs. They are letting them know that they won’t get to their calf without going through them.

What Types of Wild Dogs Are There?

While we most commonly think of the African wild dog, that is not the only wild dog. We have compiled a list of 10 types of wild dogs.

  1. Bush dog
  2. Dingo
  3. Manned wolf
  4. Red wolf
  5. Grey wolf
  6. Arctic fox
  7. Red fox
  8. Jackal
  9. Coyote
  10. African wild dog

Of course, the wild dogs pictured here are the African wild dogs. These dogs weigh anywhere from 39-79 pounds and reach anywhere from 29-43 inches in length. So, as we see, they are no match to take on a 12,000-pound elephant, and two of them at that!
