See a Cute Baby Elephant Practice Its Charge Against Tiny Birds

You know the phrase “curiosity killed the cat?” Well, we see something like this happening in the clip below, except it isn’t a cat, but a baby elephant who is interested in some birds. And thankfully the elephant doesn’t die — he just has a whole lot of curiosity in him!

Baby Elephant Sighting in Zimbabwe

At the start of the footage, we see a baby elephant walking around in the Mana Pools National Park in Zimbabwe. His mother is close behind him, watching his every move. The mother stays close because this young elephant is too young to be on their own. She is there to help him with food, shelter, and protection against potential predators. 

We see that this baby elephant has a fascination with some helmet guinea fowls that are walking in front of this elephant. Curiosity gets the best of this baby elephant, and he stops to see how they peck and walk around. Then, at five seconds, he goes right up behind these birds and swings his trunk at them. This spooks the birds, and they quickly scurry off. 

At eight seconds, we comically see this baby elephant stare ahead at the birds wandering off. It’s as if he is mocking them, saying, “Haha, I told you.”

Elephants in Africa

Elephants of the family Elephantidae can be found throughout Africa and Asia. They are so common, especially in Africa, that they are labeled in the “Big Five” in Africa. The big five are the lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and African buffalo. “The term “Big Five” originally referred to the difficulty in hunting … these five large African mammal species were known to be dangerous, and it was considered a feat by trophy hunters to bring them home.” 

The elephant is a large mammal that can weigh upwards of 12,000 pounds and reach 12 feet in height. We can only imagine that they would be difficult animals to hunt in the wild!
