Alaska is a big state. However, there are many countries bigger than Alaska. While we can’t provide an extensive list (there are far too many in the world), here are some of the biggest countries that are larger than Alaska.
1. Russia
- 6.6 million square miles
Russia is a vast country spanning two continents and boasts a diverse landscape. It is the largest country in the world, covering almost one-eighth of the Earth’s landmass. With a population of over 144 million, this country is a melting pot of different cultures and languages.
The country’s landscape is as diverse as its people. The Arctic tundra in the north is home to polar bears, walruses, and reindeer. The vast Siberian forests are home to wolves, brown bears, and moose. The Ural Mountains, which separate Europe and Asia, are a popular destination for hiking and skiing.
2. Canada
- 3.85 million square miles
Canada is a vast and diverse country that is known for its stunning wilderness. From the majestic Rocky Mountains to the expansive forests and glaciers, the natural beauty of Canada is truly astonishing.
Despite its rugged landscapes, Canada is also home to several vibrant and diverse cities. Toronto and Vancouver are both celebrated for their multiculturalism, with a rich mix of cultures and languages that make these cities truly unique.
Quebec is known for its French-speaking culture, which gives it a distinctive flavor that sets it apart from the rest of the country.
3. China
- 3.7 million square miles
China has a long and fascinating history that blends traditional and innovative elements. Today, this country has become an economic powerhouse. China boasts some of the world’s most impressive cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, that are vibrant and modern hubs of innovation.
On the other hand, China is also home to some of the most remarkable historical sites on the planet, such as the Great Wall, which has stood for centuries.
4. United States
- 3.8 million square miles
The United States is a country located in North America and is known for its diverse blend of landscapes and cultures. It is a melting pot of various ethnicities, religions, and languages. The country is vast and has a wide range of landscapes.
You’ll find huge cities like New York and Los Angeles, which are bustling with life and energy, as well as vast national parks that offer breathtaking natural scenery and opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Regional identities in the United States tend to be quite strong, and people often identify closely with their state or region. For instance, people from Texas are known for their love of cowboy culture and barbecue, while those from California embrace a laid-back lifestyle and an appreciation for healthy living.
5. Brazil
- 2.76 million square miles
The Amazon rainforest, which covers a significant part of Brazil, is home to many unique plants and animals, making it one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. The Amazon River, which flows through the rainforest, is one of the longest and widest rivers in the world and is a vital resource for the people living in the region.
However, Brazil is not just about the Amazon rainforest. It is also home to a vibrant culture and bustling cities. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo are two of the most famous cities in Brazil, attracting thousands of tourists daily.
Rio de Janeiro is known for its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue. São Paulo is a cosmopolitan city with a rich cultural scene.
6. Australia
- 2.97 million square miles
Australia is a truly unique place that’s known for its huge number of unique animals, from Kangaroos to Koalas. This country has many diverse landscapes, such as the Outback desert, windy cliffs, and the Great Barrier Reef. It is unique in tons of different ways, drawing thousands of tourists.
While most people know about the country’s environmental uniqueness, the vibrant cultural life of Sydney and Melbourne are less well-known. The laidback culture of Australia is something that everyone should experience at least once.
7. India
- 1.2 million square miles
India is about twice as large as Alaska. It’s home to some very rich, vibrant cities like Mumbai and Delhi. Thanks to the country’s rich religious and cultural past, you’ll find tons of historical wonders, such as the Taj Mahal. Many people visit just to see these wonders.
There are also diverse landscapes outside of the city. For instance, you’ll find beautiful mountains to the north and miles of beaches to the south. Tigers in India make up 70% of the world’s population of tigers, and there are tons of other unique wildlife found in India, too.
8. Kazakhstan
- 1 million square miles
Most people don’t know much about Kazakhstan. However, a few glances at pictures quickly bring this beautiful country to life. It is barely bigger than Alaska but also features several mountain ranges, snow-capped peaks, and plains. It’s nicknamed the “Land of Steppes,” and the area probably played a big role in the development of the modern human.
The capital of Kazakhstan, Astana, boasts modern architecture and historical sites.
9. Argentina
- 1.1 million square miles
This country has a unique landscape, from the towering Andes mountains to the Pampas plains. You can even see glaciers in Patagonia. That said, the biggest draw to this country is the vibrant culture of Buenos Aires.
The region of Mendoza also creates some of the best wine in the world, drawing a sizeable crowd each year. Many tourists also enjoy visiting Iguazu Falls, which is considered a natural wonder.
10. Algeria
- 919,595 square miles
Algeria is massive. It’s the largest country in Africa, so it contains many different environments and cultures. You can relax on the Mediterranean coastline, where there are plenty of historical sites and vibrant city cultures to enjoy. The country also contains a portion of the Sahara Desert (which doesn’t contain much).
The capital of Algeria is Algiers, and this city contains a unique blend of French colonial architecture combined with the unique Arab-Berber culture.
11. Democrative Republic of the Congo
- 905,397 square miles
The DRC is home to a bustling wildlife scene. You can catch glimpses of animals you can only see in the zoo elsewhere, like gorillas and bonobos. Much of the country is rainforest, but several vibrant cities are also worth visiting.
Kinshasa, the country’s capital, is a music and art center. It’s also one of the most populated cities in the country.
Sadly, the DRC has faced decades of poverty and conflict.
