Most lakes in Pennsylvania are snuggled into a lush, vibrant landscape that you can’t find in many other places in the country. The state’s diverse geography means that you’ll have a new, surprising landscape to observe every time you go to a new lake.

For instance, in the Pocono Mountains, you’ll discover serene lakes surrounded by dense, ancient forests. These forests provide a serene atmosphere to hike in or just observe from the shore.

In contrast, the Allegheny Plateau has more rugged, mountainous terrain. It’s a completely different world to take in.

2. Abundance of Lakes

On the other hand, there are also large tourist destinations that are often packed with people throughout the summer. There are tons of opportunities for water sports and recreation just because there are so many different lakes and reservoirs.

Plus, many lakes are designed for recreation in mind. There are designated areas for camping, hiking, and even a few water parks. Therefore, you can easily make a whole vacation out of visiting a lake.

Many people love visiting Pennsylvania in the fall to take a look at the bright fall foliage. Plus, the lakes tend to be less populated in the cooler months, allowing you to enjoy much of it for yourself.

6. Cultural and Historical Sites

The clean sky above the lakes is a great place to view passing birds, as trees won’t obstruct your sight.

You may also spot other kinds of wildlife, like deer and beavers. Most areas around the lakes are protected, providing plenty of habitat for local wildlife.

Many of Pennsylvania’s lakes are situated within state parks or protected natural areas. This ensures that the lakes’ ecosystems remain healthy and vibrant for future generations to enjoy. It also promotes responsible outdoor recreation and conservation efforts in the region.

Because of the protected nature of these lakes, you’ll often get to sightsee on wild shores – instead of staring at lake houses the whole time. Visiting these lakes further supports local conservation.

11. Water Quality

Many lakes in Pennsylvania have stellar water quality, promoting a safe swimming environment and helping conserve local fish species. No one wants to swim (or even boat) on a dirty lake. Plus, if the lakes become too contaminated, the local wildlife may also pay.

Luckily, Pennsylvania takes its water quality very seriously. Of course, this does mean there are some rules and regulations to help the water remain clean. However, these laws help ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy these lakes.

12. Camping Variety
