Black Bear Sighting in Canada

The video posted above takes us to Canada. This video was shared on the news channel CTV News. This news station is Canada’s most watched news organization for local and national news, according to their description. Their page has more than one million subscribers. This video alone has received more than 138,000 views in just a few days since it was reported. 

Black Bear Vs. Candy 

At the start of this video, we are taken to Tipton’s gas bar in Lake Cowichan. We see a massive black bear taking a stroll in the parking and decided to stop off here at this local shop for some goodies. One of the owners of this shop was there at 6:30 a.m. and reportedly left the door propped open. The bear uses this to his advantage and walks right on in.

As soon as the bear walked in, the owner was alerted to someone’s presence. However, this bear is probably not what he was expecting to see. We see the bear meander slowly through the store. Notice how careful he is. He doesn’t try to rummage through anything. As the newscaster said, “Almost as though the bear was looking for something in particular.”

He finally landed right in front of the $0.70 gummy bears and decided this was exactly what he was looking for. The bear grabbed a bag and just walked right out of the store. And to think he didn’t even pay for it! He went right out to the parking lot and laid down to eat his gummies.

How Many Black Bears Live in Canada?

Black bears (Ursus americanus) of the family Ursidae reside throughout North America. There are estimated to be 800,000 black bears roaming throughout. Their conservation status is labeled in IUCN as of the least concern. 

Parks Canada reports that there may be more than 380,000 black bears in Canada alone. 

Bears are solitary creatures and will hunt on their own. As omnivores, they eat things such as fruits, nuts, and various rodents. And of course, apparently gummy bears, too.
