Athletic Leopards Sighting in Africa

The next video posted at the top of this blog post takes us to Africa. The Latest Sightings YouTube channel posted this short clip recently and it’s already received more than 44,000 views!

This videographer caught amazing footage of these leopards coming through the bushes. The leopard turns around, as another leopard behind him emerges. Suddenly, the leopard does a 360-degree turn and leaps high up on the tree like he’s doing parkour, and the other follows and they run off.

The World Freerunning Parkour Federation defines parkour as “the act of moving from point “a” to point “b” using the obstacles in your path to increase your efficiency.”

And the fact that these leopards tried their hand, or rather paw, at parkour simply astounded us! We even hear the sound of the wildlife videographer chuckling at the sight of these two leopards doing this. It makes us wonder, just how high can leopards jump?

How High Can Leopards Jump?

We’ve seen felines of all sorts run fast and jump like lions, cheetahs, and these leopards in the video above. But, finding out just how high they can jump is truly amazing. 

Leopards (Panthera pardus) of the order Carnivora are agile felines that weigh anywhere from 66-198 pounds (30-90 kilograms). They reach between 40-75 inches (100-190 centimeters.)

According to the World Wildlife Organization, leopards are known to be able to leap higher than 19 feet horizontally. Not only this, but they can run up to 36 miles per hour in short bursts, which helps in their ability to leap this far up. Being able to leap horizontally is one thing, but what about vertically? Well, surprisingly, leopards can jump straight up and down 10 feet. Now that is agility at its finest!

Are Leopards Only Found in Africa?

The African Wildlife Federation states that there are nine subspecies of leopards. While when we think of leopards our first image of them might be running across the plains of Africa, we can assure you that Africa is not the only place they can be found.

Leopards can be found in Asia, including China, India, Eastern Russia, and Africa. Across those nine species, there are estimated to be some 250,000 left in their population. Their conservation status is considered to be not extinct.
