If you think elephants are always nice, think again! Sometimes, they can let their inner human out and show a bit of road rage. A viral video captures the moment a massive elephant crushed a small car like a toy in the middle of the road after it looked like it was hit.

The video shows the elephant on top of the car, apparently after being hit. The car is completely mangled, with its bumper torn off, its suspension wrecked, and its mirrors totally shattered.

The elephant seems unfazed by the collision. It gets up and walks away from the scene, leaving behind a trail of debris. The car’s driver and possible passengers are nowhere to be seen. However, we can only imagine that they were in a state of shock!

As the video ends, we see one last frame, and from what we can tell, it looks like the elephant stomps on the car out of frustration! We can’t be sure, but if so, it’s probably a justified response to just being hit. Since an elephant can’t call its insurance company, it can only get some retribution through a little stomping action. No blame here!

Do Elephants Get Hit By Cars Often?

Elephants are massive animals that roam the wild in Africa and Asia. Sometimes, they encounter human-made obstacles, such as roads and cars. How often do these collisions happen, and what are the consequences?

From most sources online, there doesn’t seem to be a definitive answer to exactly how often elephants get hit by cars, as there isn’t some centralized recording agency for these types of things. However, It’s very possible that it happens more than we would think in places where elephants cross the road, especially at night or if there is a dense forest on either side.

Regardless, an impact with an elephant is likely to injure the elephant and potentially kill the humans inside. For reference, high-speed impacts with much smaller animals like deer and moose are often deadly, so an elephant could be even more fatal. It’s as if you hit a wall!

Are African Elephants Normally Aggressive?

African elephants are typically gentle and social animals, though they can exhibit aggressive behavior when provoked. Generally, they are seen eating, bathing, playing, and socializing with other elephants in a herd. It is also normal for elephants to use their trunks to explore their environment, find food, and interact with other animals.

African elephants are most known for their intelligence and strong family bonds. They have long memories and are capable of expressing emotions such as joy, excitement, and sorrow. It is also normal for elephants to communicate with one another through sound, touch, scent, and body language.

Though African elephants are generally gentle animals, they can exhibit aggressive behavior when provoked. This includes stomping on objects, trumpeting, and charging. This behavior is seen as a warning sign, notifying nearby animals that they should leave the area. In some cases, they may even attack if they feel threatened.

Is It Normal Behavior for Elephants to Interact With Cars?

While it’s likely common for elephants and cars to cross paths in Kruegger National Park, elephants also inhabit areas outside these protected habitats and do cross highways, though the frequency of this is unknown.

While there are no clear statistics on how often elephants interact with cars, there are many videos uploaded by individuals where elephants cross highways in groups or alone, and at times interact with the cars. Like the one above, in some footage, elephants interact with cars aggressively. In one case, a family was forced to evacuate a van as an elephant was attempting to turn it over. In another, a car passenger offered an elephant a piece of fruit, probably hoping to distract it so they could pass. Instead, the elephant invaded the car by aggressively sticking its trunk through the window. They threw more fruit out the window and were finally able to dodge the elephant.

Many people who share areas with elephants view them as a nuisance, as these animals can damage crops. In Africa in recent years, there have been a lot of internal conflicts that have caused people to flee areas they once lived in and create new communities in areas near wildlife nature preserves. This causes more overlap between humans and wild animals, and they compete over resources in times of drought. If elephants act aggressively toward humans, humans will in turn shoot them to protect themselves. While poaching was a main contributor to the decline of elephant numbers, now the number one problem is human encroachment. While there were estimates of over 10 million elephants in Africa in the 1930’s, more recent estimates put them at 500,000. They are now listed as critically endangered.

How Big Are African Elephants?

African elephants are the largest living land animals on Earth. They can grow to be up to 13 feet tall, 24 feet long, and weigh up to 14,000 pounds. They are about twice as tall as an average horse and weigh 5 or 6 times as much as a large cow. The head of an African elephant alone can be as big as a car!

In comparison, an African elephant is much larger than other animals you would find in the African savanna. Lions, for example, are only about five feet tall and weigh an average of 350 pounds. Gazelles, on the other hand, are only about two or three feet tall and weigh up to 140 pounds. As you can see, African elephants tower over the other animals that share their habitat.

In comparison to other objects, African elephants are huge. An average refrigerator is only about 5 feet tall and 2 feet wide. An African elephant is more than twice as tall and four times as wide. An adult human weighs about 180 pounds on average. That is the size of a newborn baby elephant!
