Stand-up paddleboarding is a fun pastime that can be relaxing. No wonder a Giant Squid decided to give it a try! It sure shocked the man who thought the board was all his, however. Fortunately for both man and squid, he kept his cool and let the animal explore the board rather than try to fend it off.
Watch the Incredible Footage Below!
In this video, a man is stand-up paddleboarding with some friends. He is sitting on his board taking a break when he spots something in the water.
His friend has a camera and dips it below the water to see what is going on. The man pulls a neon green line in and the Giant Squid follows. You can see its massive body under the water. The squid moves toward the paddleboard, leading with its long tentacles. A red body follows.
As it gets near the board, tentacles begin to rise up out of the water. The suckers are clearly visible and even its large body breaks the surface. Giant squid can get up to 600 pounds or more and can be up to 50 feet long.
Can I Have A Ride?
This squid used its long tentacles to grab ahold of the board. The man shifts around, trying to avoid its suckers. Eventually, he is forced to jump off the board as the squid takes it over. He doesn’t go far and stays near his board.
What are his friends doing during all of this? Laughing and capturing it all on video, of course. Lucky for us but we’re guessing the man would have appreciated some help. He seems like a good sport, though, and happy enough to let the squid claim some space on his board.
Giant squid tend to eat large fish and even sharks. It’s possible that the squid thought that the paddleboard was potential prey and came close to see if it could have a snack.
While Giant Squid attacks on humans have been recorded, this squid was small enough that it was not a likely outcome. The man could have been injured by the suckers, however, and was wise to get out of the squid’s way.
Eventually, he gets back on his board and shares space with the squid. The video ends before we can see either man or squid give in. We can always hope that they learned to co-exist and are off stand-up paddleboarding into the sunset together.
