Raccoon Detectives: A Unit Plan for Exploring Our Masked Neighbors

Published 1 min read

Raccoons are small nocturnal mammals, renowned for their distinctive physical features and mysterious nighttime adventures. They are highly adaptable, opportunistic hunters, able to forage for food in forests near lakes and streams. They can even be found scavenging in garbage cans in your backyard. Raccoons are also remarkable problem solvers, able to use their paws and hands like tiny tools for opening containers, climbing, and searching for food in darkness.

In our five-day unit plan, designed specifically for elementary-aged students, children will delve deeper into the clever world of raccoons, exploring more about their unique physical characteristics, adaptable habitats, and what they need to survive, their omnivorous diets, their family dynamics, and what life is like as a nocturnal animal, being active primarily at night.

Included in the unit plan are five days’ worth of engaging daily lesson plans, instructional materials, printable worksheets, graphic organizers, comprehension questions, children’s books and educational video suggestions, writing templates, and more!
