Porcupines are mid-sized mammals belonging to the rodent family, renowned for their specialized adaptation known as quills. A unique body covering and defense mechanism, quills are actually sharp, modified hairs, which give porcupines an efficient layer of protection when encountering dangerous predators. Unless threatened, porcupines are typically slow-moving, gentle creatures, spending most of their time resting at the tops of trees, eating plants and leaves and exploring their habitat at night.
