Porcupines in the Wild: A Free Unit Plan for Kids

Published 1 min read

Porcupines are mid-sized mammals belonging to the rodent family, renowned for their specialized adaptation known as quills. A unique body covering and defense mechanism, quills are actually sharp, modified hairs, which give porcupines an efficient layer of protection when encountering dangerous predators. Unless threatened, porcupines are typically slow-moving, gentle creatures, spending most of their time resting at the tops of trees, eating plants and leaves and exploring their habitat at night.

In our five-day unit plan, designed specifically for elementary-aged students, children will delve deeper into the nocturnal world of porcupines, exploring more about their habitat and what they need to survive, their herbivorous diets, their unique defense mechanisms and physical characteristics, and common misconceptions made about their species.

Included in the unit plan are five days’ worth of engaging daily lesson plans, instructional materials, printable worksheets, graphic organizers, comprehension questions, children’s books and educational video suggestions, writing templates and more!
