When maintenance manager Brett Martin at Good Samaritan Society senior living facility in Olathe, Kansas, brought his pet pig, Odin, into work, senior residents took notice. They started playing with the pig and feeding it table food. Not long afterward, Martin was being praised for his unconventional pet.

With a supervisor’s permission, Martin was allowed to bring Odin to the senior living facility daily. He hoped Odin’s energy and joyous spark would bring smiles to seniors at the Good Samaritan Society. Pet pigs can be very social with humans when given the proper nutrition and exercise. Additionally, Odin gets along well with other animals around the facility, frequently playing with cats and dogs owned by residents and staff.

In the Maguindanao del Norte Province of the Philippines, a sea turtle dish claimed three human lives and hospitalized approximately 32 others. Symptoms of illness included vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Sea turtles are classified as endangered, so hunting and consuming them is illegal in the Philippines. Nevertheless, some communities continue serving sea turtles as part of their cultural customs.

Additionally, sea turtles have been known to take lives in the past after consumption. In 2013, a sea turtle dish caused four deaths in the Eastern Samar Province of the Philippines. The sea turtle’s diet often consists of algae toxic to humans. This contamination spreads through sea turtle consumption and can cause severe illness or death in humans and animals alike. Find out more about the lethal consequences of sea turtle consumption here.
