A Little Bit About Capybaras

Capybaras are famous online for their cuteness. They are the largest rodents in the world, often weighing around 80 to 150 pounds. They grow to around three to four feet long. Capybaras went viral online in 2025 after large groups were reported to have overtaken neighborhoods in Argentina’s Nordelta gated community. Capybaras are native to South America in countries like Brazil, Colombia, Argentina, and Peru. These rodents are dependent on water, so they always live near bodies of water such as lakes, rivers, or wetlands. They are excellent swimmers, aided by their partially webbed feet. While their cute appearance contributes to their fame, some of their features are also practical adaptations for life in the water. The high placement of their eyes, ears, and nostrils allows them to remain mostly submerged while still being able to see, hear, and breathe above the water’s surface.

Given their aquatic lifestyle, capybaras feed on aquatic plants as well as grass, fruits, and tree bark. They are also very social animals, as seen in the video above. Capybaras often live in groups consisting of around 10 to 20 individuals. In some cases, groups can grow even larger. They have a calm nature and are tolerant of other animals and humans. This is one reason why capybara videos are so popular online. It’s not uncommon to see other animals, like birds, sitting on their backs as they lounge around. So, what exactly makes capybaras so relaxed and easygoing?

One amazing trait of capybaras is how well they get along with other animals.

Why Are Capybara So Chill?

Capybaras are extremely chill thanks to their calm temperaments, which are largely due to their herbivorous diet. Because they do not hunt other animals, they lack the strong predatory instincts that can cause aggression or violence. Living in social groups also means that they have to learn cooperation. They also tend to avoid conflict. If threatened by predators, capybaras often escape into the water. This tendency to avoid confrontation means they are generally non-aggressive toward other animals.

Capybaras are usually not aggressive, but like any animal, they still have their biting points. They might become aggressive if they feel threatened, are protecting other group members, or if mothers are defending their young. In these cases, they may use their incisors to bite, but this is rare. Their generally gentle nature is one reason they often get along well with humans, which adds to their appeal.
