What Is a Grouper?
Groupers come in a variety of appearances and sizes, with most growing to around two to four feet. Generally speaking, most groupers are larger in comparison to other reef-dwelling fish, making them predators in those habitats. Groupers are friendly toward humans and are often described as curious. They will swim alongside divers, as seen in the video above. However, they are still wild fish and can be dangerous regardless of their general nature. Most species of groupers are known as demersal fish, meaning they dwell near the bottom of the ocean. They stay close to oceanic structures such as coral reefs, caves, shipwrecks, and other formations, as these provide hiding spots. They use these hiding spots to ambush prey, waiting for it to swim by before sucking it in with their large mouths.
What Are Goliath Groupers?
Goliath groupers get their name from their massive size, as seen in the video above. They grow larger than most other grouper species, reaching roughly six to eight feet in length. At this length, they can easily weigh anywhere between 400 and 800 pounds. These large fish grow slowly, living for 30 to 50 years, and are among the largest fish in the world. Using similar hunting methods as described above, goliath groupers hunt for lobsters, octopus, smaller fish, and crabs. Their large jaws help them vacuum in prey, allowing them to expend less energy while hunting. Their role as hunters makes them important predators, helping to control and maintain the populations of the animals they eat. These incredible fish are a wonder of the ocean, and it’s remarkable to see them, as shown in the video above.
