Koalas, renowned for being tree-dwelling, leaf-munching marsupials, can be found primarily in eucalyptus forests in the eastern and southeastern coasts of Australia. Koalas spend most of their time sleeping, clinging to branches high in trees where they are safe from predators, eating leaves, and taking care of their babies, called joeys. Joeys spend the first six months of their lives in their mother’s pouches, where they continue to develop and get nutrients.

In our five-day unit plan, designed specifically for elementary-aged students, children will delve deeper in to the restful world of koalas, exploring more about their habitat and what they need to survive, their herbivorous diets, their unique life cycles as marsupials and conservation efforts being made to protect and keep koalas safe.
