Amazing Axolotls: A Free Unit Plan for Kids

Quick Take

  • Axolotls are classified as amphibians, yet they break the defining rule of their own animal class in a way that sets them apart from nearly every relative.
  • Wild axolotls possess a biological ability that has captivated scientists for decades, and it is far more extraordinary than their feathery gills might suggest.
  • Fewer wild axolotls remain on Earth than you'd expect, and their survival hinges on one specific habitat condition most people overlook.
  • This free five-day unit arms elementary students to explore axolotl survival, diet, and life cycle, with every lesson, organizer, and writing template already built in.

Axolotls are a fascinating amphibian species, most well-known for having feathery gills coming out the sides of their head and the unique ability to regenerate certain body parts. Axolotls are found in cool, freshwater habitats native to Mexico, remaining aquatic for the majority of their lives, unlike other amphibians who typically spend a portion of their lives on land. Protecting our freshwater habitats is vital in giving axolotls a better chance at survival, as wild axolotls are a critically endangered species, with fewer than 1,000 remaining in Mexico.

Axolotl is an exotic and very cute pet.

In our five-day unit, designed for elementary-aged students, children can dive deeper into the physical characteristics of axolotls, investigate axolotl habitats, discover more about their life cycle, learn about their carnivorous diets, and uncover the specialized features that aid in their survival.

Included in the unit plan are five days’ worth of comprehensive lesson plans, graphic organizers, educational video ideas, children’s book suggestions, comprehension questions, instructional resources, writing templates, and research activities. We hope you enjoy exploring more into the fascinating world of axolotls!
