After Dark Adventures: A Nocturnal Animals Unit Plan for Kids

Nocturnal animals include a variety of species that are primarily active at night, utilizing their unique adaptations to hunt and explore under the cover of darkness. From remarkable night vision to excellent sense of smell and keen hearing, nocturnal animals have specialized behaviors and characteristics that aid in their abilities to forage for food. Nocturnal animals include small mammals like bats and hedgehogs, insects like moths and fireflies, owls, raccoons, foxes, and more.

In our five-day unit, designed for elementary-aged students, children will investigate more about what it means to be nocturnal, why certain animals are nocturnal, and delve deeper into specific nocturnal species, including bats, raccoons, owls, and hedgehogs. Included in the unit plan are five days’ worth of comprehensive lesson plans, graphic organizers, educational video ideas, children’s book suggestions, comprehension questions, instructional resources, writing templates, and research activities.
