What Two Breeds Make a Black Mouth Cur?

Black mouth curs are descendants of a combination of terriers and hounds. Due to the purebred bloodlines of the breed, you can expect them to cost a pretty penny.

Black Mouth Cur and Pit Bull Mix Origins

It is uncertain the exact history of how the black mouth cur and pit bull mix were born. However, there is the belief that black mouth curs began to breed with pit bulls when they began to make an appearance in the United States.

Let’s take a short look at the history of each breed to comprehend better how they came to be.

Black Mouth Cur History

Black mouth curs first made an appearance in the United States during the 1700s. They play a significant role in United States history. For example, some people believe that without the black cur, European settlers wouldn’t have been able to spread themselves as far west in the United States.

Pit Bull History

Pit bulls were originally bred in the United Kingdom during the 1800s. They were cross-bred with a bulldog and a terrier, which is how the pit bull came into existence. Originally, pit bulls were bred for the sake of cruelly maiming bulls and rats. However, their original purpose was outlawed by the British Parliament Act in 1835.

Pit bulls began to create interest in the United States when the USDA smiled upon the breed’s potential to work with the military.

Soon after, the pit bull began to earn spotlight as “America’s Sweethearts.” Moreover, they found stardom in advertisements, commercials, and even television shows.

In current times, pit bulls are beloved family members and hard-working dogs that put a smile on everyone’s face.

Occasionally, you can also find a well-trained therapy pit bull cuddling up with sick children in the hospital.

How Much Does a Black Mouth Cur Pit Bull Mix Cost?

The cost of buying a pit bull cur mix will vary. For example, if you desire to purchase a puppy from a breeder, it can cost you $1400 and up, depending on the breeder. On the other hand, if you wish to adopt a puppy from a shelter or rescue, it will cost you much less. Rescue and shelter dogs will cost anywhere from $250 to $550, depending on the rescue. In some cases, it may cost a tad more, especially if training is involved.

Personality

This section is meant to give you an idea of what a pit bull cur mix may be like. But, it is important to keep in mind that every dog is different, and no amount of research can fully predict the outcome of a specific dog.

Black mouth curs are known to be loving, adorable, sweet, loyal, and protective. These pups are also confident in themselves and tend to trust with ease.

On the flip side, pit bulls can have a wide array of personalities, from daring, charming, and loyal to far less desirable traits such as aggressive, jealous, and anxious. Another thing to keep in mind is that pit bulls are a breed that is prone to separation anxiety and can become destructive.

Diet

Feeding your black mouth cur and pittie mix will vary depending on their needs. If your dog is going to be working, they will require food that is high in protein, fats, and vital nutrients to support their physically demanding lifestyle.

On the other hand, if your dog is going to be raised for companionship, a kibble that is high in protein, such as chicken or duck, will do. You will also need to feed them plenty of recommended supplements from your veterinary professional to ensure their muscles are being fed the right nutrition.

Appearance

It is hard to predict the exact appearance that your pup will have accurately. However, it is safe to say that either your dog will look more like a black mouth cur, or they will resemble a pit bull. There are two distinctive looks due to only two breeds being mixed together. But if your dog’s parents were not purebred black-mouth curs or pit bulls, they may resemble smaller or larger breeds.

Grooming

Since your pup has shorter fur than other dog breeds, they won’t require extensive grooming. But that doesn’t mean that they won’t require any. Use a bristle brush to comb their fur once or twice per week. You will also want to use a shedding tool when you notice your pup sheds more.

Their nails will need to be clipped every 2 or 3 months to prevent overgrowth, which can lead to injury to themselves or you.

Also, you will need to brush their teeth a few times a week to reduce tartar and dental mishaps.

Finally, your pup will also require a bath once per month with a veterinarian-approved wash to reduce the chances of skin infections and disease.

Exercise

Black mouth cur pit bull mixes are high-energy dogs. To support their energy and keep their bodies in good health, they should spend about 60 to 90 minutes per day exercising through play and walks.

Health

Black-mouth cur pit bull mixes are generally healthy dogs. On the contrary, your dog will still need to see a vet at least once a year for shots and regular checkups.

Your pup’s breed is one of the healthier mixes out there. However, there are some health issues they can be prone to, such as behavioral issues, hip dysplasia, vision disorders, and bacterial skin infections. This is why yearly visits to the vet are needed to assess and monitor your dog’s overall health.

Training

Black cur pit bull mixes are highly intelligent pups who love to learn new tricks and commands. But despite that, they can also be stubborn, unwilling, and only want to do things their way. However, with positive reward training, patience, and confidence, your pup will do as you wish.

Socialization training is also necessary to help them become acquainted with other pets, family members, and friends to prevent your pup from mistaking them for intruders. Still, keep in mind that your dog may still harbor an instinct to hunt or attack. Thankfully, the earlier you can start your pup on socialization training, the less likely an attack or bite will happen.

Never introduce any type of training that enforces dominance or negative-reward training. The reason is that it can create aggressive behavior. Plus, it can make already aggressive dogs worse.

Is a Pit Bull Black Mouth Cur Right for You?

Are you still wondering if a pit bull cur dog is the right choice for you? Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Pit bull and black mouth cur mixes are energetic dogs. Therefore, if you are not active, you may want to consider a different breed.
  • If you are new to owning a dog, as well as training one, a pit bull black mouth cur can pose a challenging dog due to their personality and stubbornness.
  • Homes with small children and other pets are not recommended for pit bull curs. In most cases, it becomes a danger due to the potential for aggressive behavior or jealousy. However, homes with older children in their teens may be okay.
  • If you are unwilling to put in the time, dedication, and training, a pit bull cur could be the dog of your dreams.

If you are looking for a loyal, energetic, hard-working dog for your older family, a pit bull black cur mix may be the dog you are seeking.
