If you have chickens, you already know that most of your scraps and compost are their snacks! But it’s important to know what vegetables are safe for chickens to eat and which ones aren’t. Common nightshades like tomatoes and potatoes can be poisonous to your chickens in large quantities. But when it comes to cucumbers, you should have nothing to worry about — chickens can eat every part of the vegetable.
How to Serve Cucumber to Chickens
You can slice cucumbers length-wise so that your chickens don’t have to peck through the skin. If you have a large flock, consider cutting them into halves and quarters to spread the cucumber pieces out more. You can also throw a whole cucumber to your chickens if they aren’t picky about the skin and let them peck on it as a snack.
Be sure to wash cucumbers very well before offering them to your chickens if they come from a store or farm. Many farmers spray pesticides that can be detrimental to your chicken’s health if not washed off.
Are Cucumbers Good for Chickens?
The best time to offer your chickens cucumber is on a hot day. Cucumbers are full of water and they are very hydrating to chickens. Along with the water content, cucumbers are also full of fiber that will help your chicken’s digestive tract.
Aside from their water and fiber content, cucumbers are also full of vitamins and minerals. They contain a large amount of beta-carotene, phosphorus, folate, calcium, lutein, and zeaxanthin. These minerals can improve your chickens’ vision and strengthen their immune systems.
Can Chickens Eat Cucumber Plants?
If you have a garden that is accessible to your chickens, you might be wondering if the actual cucumber plant is safe to eat. While the leaves and stems are tough and not the most appetizing, you can rest assured that they are safe to eat. Just be sure that there are no pesticides or other chemicals sprayed on the plant that your chickens may have access to.
Can Chickens Eat Too Much Cucumber?
While there isn’t an exact number of ‘too much’ cucumber, it’s important to keep in mind that feed is most important for chickens. Chicken feed is specially formulated to provide all of the vitamins and minerals that they need. Therefore, scraps and other ‘snacks’ should only account for 10% or less of a chicken’s diet. If they get too full on cucumbers, they might miss out on the necessary vitamins in their food.
