You’ve likely heard the saying, “Everything is bigger in Texas.” And while that may often be true, it’s not the case for houses. The largest house in Texas is not the largest in the country. It doesn’t even crack the top ten list, with that title going to a mansion in New York.

However, Texas’ largest home is still an architectural masterpiece, filled with outrageously opulent features.

What is the Largest House in Texas, and What is its Square Footage?

Located at 1280 N. Preston Road in Prosper, the largest house in Texas is a massive 29,122 square feet. The suburb of Prosper is in the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metropolitan area and is about a 45-minute drive north of Dallas.

The property, known as the Chateau Montclair, was previously owned by former Dallas Cowboy and NFL pro football Hall of Famer, Deion Sanders. A star athlete, Sanders is the only person ever to have competed in both the Super Bowl and the World Series.

When Sanders owned the house, it sat on 112 acres of land. Since that time, developers divided the area into several lots and created the exclusive residential enclave, Montclair. The Chateau Montclair now sits on six acres within an upscale neighborhood surrounding it.

Constructed in 1999, the stucco home boasts nine bedrooms and 10.5 bathrooms. Featured in Haute Living, with its meticulous attention to detail, and grand design, the estate is considered an architectural masterpiece.

Photos of the home shown on Trulia reveal a bright and airy space with floor-to-ceiling windows letting in lots of light. When entering the estate, the first sight sets the tone with a grand foyer containing a floating double staircase and marble floors which continue throughout.

It’s not merely extravagant inside, but on the outside as well. The grounds include an outdoor kitchen, meticulously kept gardens, and an eight-acre lake with a private dock.

Facts About the Chateau Montclair

  • The garage holds 14 cars plus enough room to fit a yacht.
  • The master suite contains a 3,000-square-foot custom closet.
  • Besides the massive closet, the master suite contains a fireplace, jacuzzi, and even its kitchenette!
  • The two-lane bowling alley in the entertainment wing is computerized.
  • The entertainment wing also has a private movie theater, arcade room, indoor basketball court, sauna, steam showers, and a personal barbershop.
  • The home has three swimming pools (both indoors and out.)

Wildlife Near Chateau Montclair

Only about 20 miles west of the mansion is the Clear Creek Natural Heritage Center, a wildlife refuge containing rare bottomland and upland prairie ecosystems.

Clear Creek offers hiking trails where visitors can view the diverse wildlife in the area. Animals you may encounter here include deercoyotesbeaversriver otterssnapping turtles, and raccoons

Other Large Texas Homes

Besides Sanders’s former house, Texas is home to some impressive mansions.

Crespi Hicks, Dallas, Texas

At 27,092 square feet, the historic limestone Crespi Hicks mansion is only slightly smaller than the Chateau Montclair. Listed at $60 million, it’s also currently the state’s most expensive home on the market. Located at 5619 Walnut Hill Lane in the Preston Hollow neighborhood in Dallas, the estate sits on 15 acres of land.

Originally built by a renowned Swiss architect Maurice Fatio in 1938, the home has since been renovated and now includes modern amenities such as a 4,800 square foot entertainment complex with a home theater. Guests can enjoy themselves in the 3,000-square-foot guesthouse.

Champs d’Or, Hickory Creek, Texas

At 48,000 square feet, the Champs d’Or, located in Hickory Creek, Texas, formerly held the title of the largest house in Texas. However, the estate was sold in 2017 and converted into a wedding venue. Champs d’Or means, “field of gold,” and the inspiration for the house comes from the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte in Paris.

Chateau Bray, Manvel, Texas

If the Chateau Bray was complete, the 60,175-square-foot brick house located in Manvel, Texas, would easily hold the title as the biggest house in the state. However, the home remains unfinished. Construction began in 2001, but the 46-bedroom and 36-bathroom estate has sat empty and neglected for years.

100 Carnarvon Drive, Houston, Texas

Unlike the unfinished Chateau Bray, the home at Carnarvon Drive in Houston is a palatial masterpiece. At 26,401 square feet, eight bedrooms, and ten bathrooms, photos of the mansion show a breathtaking, museum-like estate that looks more at home in Versailles than in Texas. Perhaps the most impressive feature is the stained glass domed ceiling above the grand stair hall.
