Whether you want a mid-winter escape from the cold or a ski adventure of a lifetime, this list is sure to help you find your next destination. We’ve picked the six best states for you and your family to check out during the month of February. Candidly, we’re partial to a warm break from the chilly weather — but we’ve included some fantastic mountain locations, too, in case you’re looking to enjoy some winter sports.

1. New Mexico

You can expect temperate weather in New Mexico during the month of February. Highs reach around 60 degrees Fahrenheit. That temperature, plus the bright New Mexico sun, makes for perfect hiking weather.

Located in the southwest region of the United States, we have one of the most underrated spots in the country for travel: New Mexico. New Mexico is a beautiful state, rich in culture, nature, and food. If you’re looking to enjoy an urban vacation, there’s the gorgeous city of Santa Fe. If you’d prefer to get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine, you can head to one of the iconic national parks located in the state. Carlsbad Caverns National Park and White Sands National Park are two of the most incredible parks in the country. You’ll be sure to have a memorable experience visiting in February!

2. Montana

You can expect highs to reach around 30 degrees Fahrenheit in Big Sky — though, at the top of the mountains, it’ll probably be a bit chillier!

Montana is home to the world-renowned Big Sky resort, promising incredible snow and gorgeous sights for skiers and snowboarders. You can hole up in the cozy cabins of the resort or get out on the mountains and make the most of the February weather. Montana is a perfect stop for anyone wanting to lean into the craziness that is American winters.

3. Texas

Texas is one of the best states to visit in February because of its fantastic culture. Whether you’re looking to eat a BBQ sandwich, watch a football game, or explore the outdoors, Texas has it all.

For folks looking to escape the snow, Texas is a great spot to visit for a warm February trip. While Texas is a massive state with lots of variation, you can expect a wonderful vacation no matter where you go. For a city trip, head to Austin or Dallas and enjoy the culture of urban Texas. You’ll also have great access to all the delicious Texas barbecue! You can also head to one of Texas’s state parks. There are 89 total, and they’re located all around the state! No matter where you and your family visit in Texas, you’re sure to have a wonderful time.

4. Colorado

For folks looking to get cozy, Colorado is home to a long list of charming mountain towns with hot springs. Visit Ouray or Steamboat Springs and enjoy the snow from the comfort of a hot spring!

Another one of the best states to visit in February for winter lovers is Colorado. If you’re a skier, there’s nothing quite like Colorado skiing on the Rocky Mountains. With a seemingly endless selection of ski resorts and a longer list of back-country skiing opportunities, Colorado is the perfect place for winter athletes to enjoy their February. The state of Colorado is totally picturesque during the wintertime, and if you want to get out of the freezing cold, head to Denver, where there is much more temperate weather.

5. Louisiana

Louisiana temperatures can still be very warm in the winter. In February, average highs are around 70 degrees Fahrenheit, while lows don’t often dip below 45.

If food and fun are your thing, Louisiana might be the perfect spot for you to visit during February! Louisiana is still warm during the winter, and there’s loads of fun packed into the state. You can head to New Orleans and enjoy the delicious restaurants and boisterous culture without the packed streets of Mardi Gras. Or, you can go to one of Louisiana’s five national parks to get to know the animals that thrive in the region. Whether you want a city excursion or a natural vacation, Louisiana is one of the best states to visit in February.

6. Arizona

Another warm state to escape the winter chills is Arizona. Arizona is one of the most beautiful states in America, and it’s a wonderful spot to visit in February. Get out in the desert and enjoy the sunshine in Arizona. You can explore Phoenix, eat at restaurants, and see shows. Or you can head to a smaller destination, like Sedona, and really immerse yourself in the Western culture.
