The American bison is a majestic, stately creature that has played a prominent role in the early days of American history. While this 2,000 lb creature roamed vast parts of the West, usually hunted for food and its valuable skin by indigenous people, bison came to the brink of extinction with the advancement of Europeans across the Great Plains.
