Freshwater aquarium hobbyists often search for the ideal array of aquatic animals to include in their environment. One relatively easy animal to consider adding to your tank is shrimp. Depending on which kinds of freshwater shrimp you invest in, these crustaceans can add a unique pop of color to your aquarium. Here are five types of colorful shrimp to add to your freshwater aquarium.

1. Cherry Shrimp

Cherry Shrimp are popular pets.

Cherry shrimp are hardy and colorful crustaceans native to Taiwan. They are also part of the global aquatic pet trade.

“When it comes to colorful freshwater shrimp, Neocaridina varieties like Cherry Shrimp are a top pick,” says Gary Akavickas, owner of Sanctuary Aquatics. “They come in vibrant reds, blues, oranges, and more, and are hardy enough for beginners.”

These small, freshwater shrimp make for great pets, as they’re extremely resilient and adaptable. Additionally, their bright colors make them an attractive option for freshwater aquariums. If you’re looking for various colors of shrimp, this is certainly the way to go, as you have various options available, from red to yellow.

2. Yellow Fire Shrimp

Yellow fire shrimp are another hardy type of freshwater shrimp for your colorful aquarium. This type of shrimp is actually a color variation of the species Neocaridina davidi, the same species as the Cherry Shrimp and Bloody Mary Shrimp.

Their neon yellow hues will add the pop of color you’re searching for. Not only do they thrive in most tanks, but they also aid in algae control. Additionally, if you’re looking to establish colonies, they’re relatively easy to breed.

3. Crystal Red Shrimp

What do shrimp eat

The Crystal Red Shrimp requires a very clean water environment.

Crystal red shrimp are a beautiful option for freshwater aquariums. However, unlike the hardier crustaceans on this list, they require pure, clean water.

“Another great option is the Caridina Crystal Red Shrimp, known for their striking red-and-white patterns, though they require more stable water parameters,” Akavickas says. “Both [Cherry Shrimp and Crystal Red Shrimp] add movement and color to planted tanks and help with algae control.”

If you’re a new aquarium hobbyist or you don’t want to manage the upkeep, I’d recommend choosing a different colorful shrimp on this list. However, if you feel comfortable maintaining stable water parameters, you’ll certainly reap the benefits of housing this beautiful shrimp.

4. Bloody Mary Shrimp

Bloody Mary Shrimps are, you guessed it, the color of the alcoholic drink, Bloody Mary. These dwarf crustaceans are a deep red, almost maroon, similar to Cherry Shrimp but a bit different in hue. In fact, they are selectively bred morphs of the Cherry Shrimp. They’re also extremely easy to care for, making them ideal for beginners.

5. Blue Bolt Dwarf Shrimp

The Blue Bolt Dwarf Shrimp requires an expert’s care.

Another popular freshwater shrimp is the Blue Bolt Dwarf Shrimp. Known for its striking deep blue color, the crustacean is a bit challenging to care for, but completely worth the investment. They thrive in cooler water and are often ideal for more experienced aquarium hobbyists. These critters add the perfect pop of color to your tank.
