Donkey Births
The birthing process is quicker than many expect, typically lasting around 30 minutes to an hour. Although donkeys give birth quickly, their gestation period is long, lasting around 12 to 13 months. Comparatively, horses have a gestation period of around 11 months. This extended gestation period allows the baby to develop more fully in the womb. As a result, the baby is able to walk immediately after birth, as seen in the video. This fascinating and adorable start to life is captured in the video above. Babies can weigh anywhere from 40 to 65 pounds at birth and be around two feet tall. After a few hours, the baby will dry off, revealing a soft, fluffy coat and adorable floppy ears.
After birth, it takes the baby about 30 minutes to start walking. Their legs are wobbly and clumsy, resulting in amusing attempts to walk. However, they are persistent, making their early efforts admirable. By the end of the day, they gain more confidence and coordination, as shown in the clip above. In the first hours, the babies instinctively search for milk from their mothers. The mother’s instincts also kick in after birth, as she licks and nuzzles the foal to bond and keep it clean. They become very protective, guarding their foals from strangers and other animals. Baby donkeys are among the cutest animals, and hopefully, the video above brightens your day!
