An armadillo that enjoys playing basketball is not something you would normally expect. However, meet Frank, a basketball-loving armadillo going viral for his cuteness. Frank the Armadillo
Frank was originally born in a captive breeding facility, and when the facility had too many males, he found a new home with Animal Tracks Inc. In hopes of giving Frank something fun and stimulating to do outside of digging around in his playpen all day, his caretakers gave him a ball, to which he quickly grew attached. His caretakers quickly saw how much Frank enjoyed playing with balls and now have a budget dedicated to replacing all the ones he’s popped. Popping roughly seven balls a week with his claws during playtime, Frank is living the good life thanks to the support of his caretakers and fans.
While Frank may be a basketball prodigy among armadillos, he is also naturally curious and playful. He loves to dig around his playpen. Armadillos are aerators that use their claws to dig through the soil, helping plants grow in the future. By constantly digging, Frank enjoys spending time in the burrows he creates. Frank is easily one of the cutest armadillos out there!

An armadillo’s daily routine in the wild looks a lot like Frank’s, just minus the basketball. Armadillos spend their time digging, as it is part of their instincts. They dig to find food primarily, using their strong sense of smell to search for worms and insects underground. They also dig burrows for shelter. While digging for themselves, they help aerate the soil, which benefits the environment by bringing air and nutrients to the ground. Armadillos also rest, napping throughout the day to replenish the energy they use while digging. Playing with basketballs, as Frank does, is difficult for armadillos due to their claws. Their sharp claws with strong grips are great for digging around, but not so great at holding a basketball. Frank pops several balls each week, but still has fun nonetheless.
