Why Do Komodo Dragons Fight?
Komodo dragons, like most other animals and reptiles, fight over a few primary reasons. These include territory, dominance, mating, and food. Fighting for a mate is the most common reason, as it allows males to display their physical strength and prowess. Using their strong jaws and sharp claws, they wrestle with each other in extremely painful attacks. Although these fights are aggressive, they do not always end in death. Typically, one dragon will back down after being overpowered, leading to an obvious victor. However, that does not mean deaths do not occur, as their vicious attacks can be fatal. Some attacks occur over food, with the dominant dragon gaining access to the entire prey carcass.
Komodo dragons fight using intimidation, clawing, biting, and wrestling. Before a full fight occurs, males will intimidate each other as much as possible. They arch their bodies and hiss at each other to intimidate, which can cause an opponent to retreat if they feel sufficiently threatened. Clawing and biting are also used, with the goal of inflicting lasting and painful wounds. They gain more leverage by standing on their hind legs, as seen in the video, and often topple over each other in displays of strength.

How Often Do Fights Occur?
Fights occur for different reasons and at varying frequencies, but they are not uncommon. Fighting for a mate is a common reason for Komodo dragon combat, along with disputes over territory, food, and nest defense. During mating season, Komodo dragons will fight regularly to gain or keep a mate. Fights over food are also common. To stay healthy, Komodo dragons need access to the best prey possible, so they must fend off competition from others. While fighting to the death is less common, if the stakes are high enough, fights can escalate quickly.
