A square starfish sounds antithetical, but due to some genetic mutations, they do in fact exist. While extremely rare, these unique invertebrates are amazing to see. There are several reasons why a starfish might be square! This Instagram post by @this.our.planet went viral for discussing a square starfish. Read here to learn what makes a starfish square!

A genetic mutation may cause some starfish to be shaped like squares.

Square Starfish

The Instagram post above shows a photo of a square starfish, shocking viewers with the possibility of this occurring in the wild. While it may seem fake, this phenomenon is rarely seen. There are a few possible reasons that a starfish may be born square.

Genetic Mutation

Potentially the most influential reason, a genetic mutation occurring is the most likely reason for this irregular appearance. A mutation in the genes that control body growth and patterns likely leads to an abnormal shape. So, rather than developing a symmetrical star shape, a skewed, square-like form can result if a mutation occurs.

Developmental Issues

Development in the embryonic and larval stages is extremely important for any species on Earth, including starfish. If improper development occurs due to damage or failure, an irregular appearance may result. These developmental issues can cause starfish to develop strange arm shapes, but rarely result in a completely square form.

Regeneration

Similar to developmental issues, regeneration can also go awry and create unusual shapes. Starfish are famous for their regeneration abilities. When they lose an arm, they can regenerate it and continue living as normal. However, in some cases, regeneration may not proceed as planned and can result in an unusual shape. While this is unlikely to make a starfish square, it does lead to some interesting appearances.

How Rare Are These Starfish?

Square starfish are extremely rare! In marine biology, the extreme rarity makes them an anomaly rather than a well-studied mutation. Information about these starfish is also scarce, and this is due to several main reasons. Because mutations can create disadvantages in the wild, it is unlikely for one of these starfish to survive long. A lack of mobility and reduced ability to hunt contribute to this. While they have a grim future, their interesting shape makes humans all over the world appreciate their uniqueness through social media.
