Most gecko owners know that leopard geckos require secure hiding spots to feel safe. While a visible, open enclosure may look nice to you, it can feel exposed to a small nocturnal reptile. However, just one spot won’t cut it. Leopard geckos need several hiding spots placed across the temperature gradient: at a minimum, provide one warm hide, one cool hide, and one humid hide.

Wondering why, exactly, leopard geckos thrive with more hides? Here are three reasons why leopard geckos need multiple hides.

1. They Reduce Stress

In the wild, leopard geckos typically move between different secure spots to avoid predators. If you only give your gecko one hide, it might feel exposed or unsafe. Offering multiple hides helps them mimic their natural behavior, which can increase their sense of security and comfort.

Additionally, having multiple hides supports healthy shedding (explained further below), which can be a stressful time for geckos. If the gecko has access to several dark hides, it will likely feel more comfortable removing its old skin. This will greatly reduce its stress.

2. They Support Healthy Shedding

As mentioned earlier, leopard geckos typically need at least one hide per temperature gradient: warm, cool, and humid. This provides them with the proper moisture chamber that enables healthy shedding. Additionally, these three options aid in thermoregulation, which is crucial during the shedding process.

To shed properly, a leopard gecko benefits from spending time in humid, damp conditions that soften its skin and make shedding easier. This prevents skin from getting stuck, which could lead to a loss of circulation and permanent injury. The gecko may also choose a cool or warm hide for the remainder of the process, depending on its needs.

3. They Allow the Gecko to Choose What It Needs

Providing multiple hides allows your leopard gecko to choose the one it needs at any given moment. For example, a stressed, overheated gecko might crave a dark, cool hide; a shedding gecko might need a humid one to help soften its skin; and a gecko that is actively digesting its food might need a warm hide. Leopard geckos instinctively seek out the conditions they need, but they must have access to appropriate hides to do so.
