Aussiedoodles are well-loved for their playful and affectionate nature. They are excellent family pets and therapy dogs. This breed is also athletic, energetic, and super intelligent, making them easy to train. But are Aussiedoodles hypoallergenic? Or will they have you wishing you got a fish instead? Discover the answer now, including how much they shed and their grooming needs.

Are Aussiedoodles Good for Allergies?

Aussiedoodles were specifically bred to be allergy friendly. These low-shed dogs are a cross between a poodle and an Australian shepherd. And they get their hypoallergenic features from their poodle heritage. Most Aussiedoodles have dense, wavy coats that have low shedding and reduced dander qualities.

People with pet allergies have negative reactions to the proteins found in animal skin cells, urine, and saliva. They can break out in rashes when their dog drools on them or develop itchy, watery eyes from excess skin cells on furniture, clothing, and floors. While most have mild symptoms, like sneezing and runny noses, others can have significant reactions, like wheezing and tightness in their chests.

Are F1B Aussiedoodles Hypoallergenic?

Aussiedoodles, like other hybrids, are classified by generation. F1 Aussiedoodles are half poodles and half Australian shepherds. F1B doodles are backcross generations bred using an F1 Aussiedoodle and a purebred poodle. And they can be double-backcrossed, too. F1BBs are bred using F1Bs and purebred poodles. With each backcross, the Aussiedoodle more closely resembles the poodle.

F1B, F1BB, F2 (bred using two Aussiedoodles), and F3 (two F2s) generations are more hypoallergenic than the F1s because they have more poodle genes. Australian shepherds are not hypoallergenic due to their heavy shedding. So breeding them with poodles allows people to experience the shepherd’s personality without dealing with their excessive allergens.

Do Aussiedoodle Dogs Shed? Do They Have Dander?

All dogs shed and produce dander to some degree. Even hairless dogs have dander. But some can shed less than others. With that said, Aussiedoodles are low to moderate shedders. They do not produce as much excess hair as a husky, but they still shed enough to cause some allergic reactions.

Are Aussiedoodles High Maintenance?

Yes, Aussiedoodles are high-maintenance dogs. Their beautiful coats require regular grooming, including frequent bathing and daily brushing. Without routine maintenance, your doodle’s hair can get tangled and unmanageable. And unmanaged hair can cause skin irritation, not just for your furry family member but for you, too. The downside to a low-shedding coat is a high-maintenance breed.

Most Aussiedoodles are calm, loving, friendly dogs. They are easy to train and get along well with children and other pets. But each doodle features its own personality. Some may be more active and energetic, like their shepherd side. While others prefer to chill and relax inside with their family. Do Aussiedoodles Bark a Lot?

Whether an Aussiedoodle is loud and talkative is sort of a toss-up. It mainly depends on genes, environment, and lifestyle that determines how often your dog barks. Most Aussiedoodles tend to bark less than other breeds. However, Australian shepherds are a vocal bunch. So if your dog takes more after their Aussie side, you may find they are louder than advertised.

What is the Downside to Aussiedoodles?

Like most doodle breeds, Aussiedoodles are highly energetic and need lots of playtime and mental stimulation. They also don’t like to be left alone for long periods. And if they do not get enough attention and outside exercise, they can become destructive. Owners may come home after a long day of work to find their furniture in disarray and their favorite shoes torn to bits.

They are highly intelligent dogs with a strong work drive, like shepherds. So they need lots of tasks to complete and intellectual nourishment.

All doodle dogs can be a good option for those with mild to moderate allergies. No doodle stands out as the most hypoallergenic. Backcross generations are more likely to have more benefits than F1s, and they exist for all doodle breeds.

Bear in mind, 100% hypoallergenic dogs do not exist. All dog breeds produce proteins that can cause allergies. But those with hypoallergenic labels can offer some relief.
