Discover the Deepest Lake in Upstate New York

When considering New York, so much is written about New York City compared to the rest of the state. To be fair, New York City has a lot of interesting features going for it, including the deepest river wholly in the United States. However, upstate New York has cities of its own, a border with Lake Ontario, and a unique culture. This part of the state also has several noteworthy lakes. Learn about the deepest lake in upstate New York and find out how deep it is as well as where it is located.

Where is Upstate New York?

Before we get into the deepest lake in Upstate New York, it is necessary to define the area. People disagree and continually debate about where the upstate portion of New York starts. Some people claim that anywhere north of Westchester and Orange counties is considered upstate. Others think that the region starts farther north.

At the very least, it is clear that New York City and Long Island are not upstate. As a result, we will limit our exploration of the deepest lake in Upstate New York to places north of the city and its closest counties. To be fair, these limits do not make much of a difference in this case. After all, none of the deepest lakes in the state are found in New York City and its nearby counties.  

Lake Ontario is a unique case, though. We’ll examine the exclusion of this lake from the list of New York’s deepest lakes.

What is the Deepest Lake in Upstate New York?

Lake Seneca is one of the largest finger lakes. Although Cayuga Lake is 38.1 miles long and 435 feet deep, Seneca Lake is 38 miles long and 618 feet deep. Seneca Lake has a greater water volume than Cayuga Lake, though.

Seneca Lake has a mean depth of 291 feet along with a maximum width of about 3.5 miles. This is a very large lake, and it is a very popular tourist area for people coming from out of state. Aside from providing amazing camping areas, the Finger Lakes region of New York is renowned for its vineyards and wineries.  

The deepest lake in Upstate New York is Seneca Lake with an average depth of about 290 feet and a maximum depth of 618 feet. Seneca Lake is one of the Finger Lakes. The Finger Lakes are 11 freshwater lakes that run generally north and south in Upstate New York. They are located southwest of Syracuse, putting them in the western part of the state.

Where is Seneca Lake on a Map?

Seneca Lake is located in four counties in New York. They are Ontario, Schuyler, Seneca, and Yates counties. Since the lake is so long, it manages to stretch through a large swath of the western part of New York state. The lake runs for about 38 miles, roughly from north to south.

The lake is one of eleven in the Finger Lakes region. They are easily found on a map since the lakes are narrow and long.  

Is Seneca Lake the Deepest Lake in New York?

Yes, Seneca Lake is the deepest lake in the entire state as well as being the deepest lake in this region. However, it is not the only deep lake found in New York. For example, Lake Champlain is a deep lake that straddles the border between New York and Vermont.

This lake reaches a depth of about 400 feet with an average depth of 64 feet. That makes it one of the deepest lakes in the state. Another one of the Finger Lakes is also among the deepest in the state. Cayuga Lake is an impressive 435 feet deep at its greatest depth, so it is one of the deepest in the state.

Of course, Lake Ontario is far larger and deeper than Seneca Lake. Yet, it’s not an inland lake in Upstate New York, so it does not earn the top spot.

Is Lake Ontario Deeper Than Seneca Lake?

Yes, Lake Ontario is deeper than Seneca Lake. Lake Ontario has a maximum depth of about 802 feet compared to Seneca Lake’s 618 feet. In a sense, Lake Ontario could be considered the deepest lake in Upstate New York.

However, the Great Lakes are a border for New York, so it makes more sense to consider an inland lake as being the longest.

Seneca Lake is the deepest lake in Upstate New York. It is one of the biggest Finger Lakes and a place where people go to explore and relax. Although Seneca Lake is the deepest in this part of the state, it’s not the deepest in the region. Lake Ontario plunges deeper than Seneca Lake, but that is not even the deepest of the Great Lakes. Lake Superior reaches 1,332 feet deep, and it’s not even close to the deepest lake in the world. That honor belongs to Lake Baikal, a body of water that measures 5,387 feet deep!
