There are many reasons why someone would want to live in Alabama, besides the chance to live in one of the aforementioned luxury homes. There are plenty of metropolitan amenities, in addition to the astonishing biodiversity. Few people know that Alabama is one of the most biologically diverse states in the country.

The Mobile River basin is considered to be the richest river complex in North America. There are numerous habitat types and countless species in this ecosystem. It runs north to south all the way through Alabama. It consists of hundreds of thousands of acres of forest land and waterways of all sizes.

Alabama is home to more species of snails, mussels, turtles, freshwater fish, and crawfish than any other state in the United States. There are 84 crawfish species here, compared to 32 in Louisiana and nine in California. The Mobile-Tensaw Delta contains 18 turtle species, which is more than the Nile and Yangtze Rivers.

A 2002 compendium by NatureServ showed that Alabama was number one among the states in aquatic diversity. It was among the top five states when considering the overall number of species of both plants and animals.

The other states in the top five (New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and California) were all more than double the size of Alabama and had fewer than half as many species per square mile of land. In addition to this, scientists are constantly discovering new species in Alabama.
