Whether you’re a traveler yourself or you have a loved one overseas, chances are high that you’re familiar with time differences. While there are only 24 hours in the day, there are 25 major time zones! However, there are also a few spots with splits along the half-hour — but we won’t dive into those. Let’s take a look at the time zones that exist around the globe, as well as where the countries they’re located in.
GMT+1:00 (Central European Time)
Central European Time is UTC/GMT +1:00. This is the common time in a lot of regions of Europe, including Belgium, Norway, Spain, and France! If you travel to Europe, it’s likely that you’ll visit some CET spots.
GMT+2:00 (Eastern European Time)
This zone, located at UTC/GMT +2.00, is also called Egypt Standard Time. There are spots in both Africa and Europe that operate in this EET. For example, Greece, Finland, and Romania are in EET, as well as Egypt and South Africa.
GMT+3:00 (Eastern African Time)
There are countries in both Europe and Africa, as well as Asia and the Middle East, located in this time zone. UTC/GMT +3.00 contains Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kenya, and Ukraine. It’s also referred to as Moscow Time.
GMT+4:00 (Near East Time)
GMT+4:00 is called Near East Time, and it contains countries in both Asia and Europe, though primarily, it’s located in Asia. Georgia, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, and Armenia are a few countries located in this zone.
GMT+5:00 (Pakistan Lahore Time)
It’s no surprise that Pakistan Lahore Time contains Pakistan, but it also includes quite a few other fantastic Middle Eastern and Asian spots. Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan are a few countries that use Pakistan Lahore Time.
GMT+6:00 (Bangladesh Standard Time)
GMT/UTC+6:00 falls in a few Asian countries, including a portion of Russia.
GMT+7:00 (Vietnam Standard Time)
Another common time zone in Asia is UTC/GMT+7:00.
GMT+8:00 (China Taiwan Time)
China Taiwan Time is GMT/UTC+8:00 and includes many portions of Asia as well as Oceania.
GMT+9:00 (Japan Standard Time)
Eastern portions of Asia fall within UTC/GMT+9:00, which is also called Japan Standard Time.
GMT+10:00 (Australia Eastern Time)
Much of Australia runs on UTC/GMT+10:00.
GMT+11:00 (Solomon Standard Time)
The Solomon Islands are a common spot that runs on the UTC+11:00 time zone, but not the only one!
GMT+12:00 (New Zealand Standard Time)
New Zealand Standard Time includes Fiji, Tuvalu, the Gilbert Islands, and most of New Zealand.
GMT-12:00
GMT-12:00 exists but primarily contains regions that don’t have residents.
GMT-11:00 (Midway Islands Time)
Midway Island Time contains a few beautiful spots in the Pacific Ocean.
GMT-10:00
UTC/GMT +9:00 is another time zone located in the Pacific.
GMT-9:00 (Alaska Standard Time)
The northernmost state of America is one of the few regions located within this time zone.
GMT-8:00 (Pacific Standard Time)
PST, or Pacific Time Zone, contains a few North American countries and states.
GMT-7:00 (Mountain Standard Time)
Mountain Standard Time contains many western states in America, like Colorado and Utah.
GMT-6:00 (Central Standard Time)
A few different countries in North America fall within the Central Time Zone, including the US, Mexico, and Canada. North America established time zones officially in 1883.
GMT-5:00 (Eastern Standard Time)
Also called Indiana Eastern Standard Time, UTC-5:00 includes states in the US, as well as a few South American countries. Canada also has a few spots in EST.
GMT-4:00 (Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands Time)
GMT-4:00 contains countries on a few different continents, including North and South America.
GMT-3:00 (Argentina Standard Time)
Also called Brazil Eastern Time, Argentina Standard Time includes a few areas in South America.
GMT-2:00
UTC-2:00 also primarily covers portions of South America. South Georgia is another area that uses this time zone.
GMT-1:00
Few regions fall within UTC/GMT-1:00.
GMT (Greenwich Mean Time)
Finally, GMT is the time zone that covers portions of Europe and West Africa. It’s in line with UTC+/-0:00. The name Greenwich comes from England’s Royal Greenwich Observatory.
