The captivating beauty of the Weimaraner is known to stop dog lovers in their tracks. They are best known for their icon grey coat and piercing eyes, but did you know that the Weimaraner can be found in more colors than just one?

The Weimaraner can be found in five stunning coat colors, so let’s introduce you to each of them below!

Odds are that your first introduction to the Weimaraner breed was through the famous William Wegman photographs. Weimaraners were the model of choice for this photographer, and the pups were often wearing colorful wigs and hats. These photos were incredibly popular due to the Weimaraner’s human-like features!

The Weimaraner may be best known for their history in modeling, but they were originally bred to be skilled hunting dogs. The Weimaraner has been used to hunt animals from bears to foxes, proving just how versatile their skills are.

Weimaraners today are wonderful family dogs, and they love nothing more than being in the presence of their loved ones. These pups are known to be attached to their owner’s hip, so be ready for a clingy companion if you adopt a Weimaraner!

#1 Piebald Weimaraner

Piebald Weimaraners are considered the most rare of their Weimaraner friends. Piebald Weimaraners have white speckling or stippling mixed along with their natural coat color. The amount of stippling on their body can range from dog to dog, but some Weimaraners are covered in the piebald speckles from head to toe. This coat color is so rare in the Weimaraner, that many assume these dogs are mixed. A piebald Weimaraner is not mixed with another breed, they just have a rare coat variation!

#2 Colored Point Weimaraner

The colored point Weimaraner has markings that are similar to that of a Doberman! They are so similar that some people even mistake the colored point Weimaraner with the Doberman, especially when it occurs in dark blue Weimaraners. These markings are typically on the face, chest, and the paws. This color variation is still quite rare, so you wont see this furry friend as often as other Weimaraner colors!

#3 White Blaze Weimaraner

The white blaze Weimaraner is one that has a white mark on the center of their chest. This mark can range in size from dog to dog, but they only meet AKC standard if the white mark on their chest is small. Some white blaze Weimaraners also have white markings on their legs, but they will not quality for AKC registration. Though not as common as the blue or grey Weimaraner, you will see these pups fairly often.

#4 Blue Weimaraner

The blue Weimaraner can vary in shades from light to dark blue, but you may notice that some look black in certain lightings. This is because the blue Weimaraner is actually a shade of dilute black rather than blue, and there is actually no blue in their coat at all. These Weimaraners are very common within the Unites States, but they are considered rare in other parts of the world.

#5 Grey Weimaraner

The grey Weimaraner is the most common Weimaraner color on our list, and they are even considered the breed standard. The grey Weimaraner can be found in varying shades of grey, including light grey, silver grey, and mouse grey.

Similar to the blue Weimaraner not actually being blue, the grey Weimaraner is a true grey! The grey Weimaraner is actually a diluted chocolate or brown, which is why the breed is often described as appearing faded or white-washed.

Which Weimaraner Colors Are AKC Recognized?

Only three of the five Weimaraner coat colors on this list are recognized by the American Kennel Club. The following Weimaraner coat colors are considered ‘standard’ for the Weimaraner:

  • Grey or silver Weimaraner
  • Blue Weimaraner
  • White blaze Weimaraner (as long as the white on their chest is an acceptable size)

The piebald Weimaraner and colored point Weimaraner are not officially recognized by the American Kennel Club. However, if you are just looking for a lovable family dog, then your Weimaraner’s coat color won’t be an issue! No matter the color of your Weimaraner, they are sure to be a wonderful companion.
