One man has dedicated his life to understanding and protecting wolves. Oliver Starr, also known as “Oliver the Wolf Guy,” works alongside some of the world’s wildest coworkers: a pack of actual wolves. Throughout his journey, he has gained knowledge about these creatures by living with them firsthand and being a part of the pack. Oliver is the man behind the Tahoe Wolf Center. This nonprofit is dedicated to wolf conservation and education. When he is not working with wolves, he is learning and writing about them. As an example, his book, The Wolf Lover’s Guide to Raising Dogs, provides readers with the connection between our canine companions and their wolf counterparts.

Oliver the Wolf Guy has worked with wolves for over 40 years. He is the author of The Wolf Lover’s Guide to Raising Dogs and the executive director of the Tahoe Wolf Center, “a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting wolf conservation through education, advocacy, and research,” according to its website. You can support their vital mission through donations, symbolic adoptions, or by purchasing educational materials and merchandise.

Oliver’s unique background provides him with a refreshing perspective on wolf-human conflicts. Such incidents are on the rise as recovering wolf populations expand into areas where people live. In particular, ranchers are often at odds with wolves, which are known to sometimes prey on cattle, swine, horses, mules, and sheep, as well as livestock guard dogs.

To give readers insight into his life as a wolf conservationist, we interviewed Oliver about his motivations for dedicating his life to understanding these misunderstood creatures and even had the chance to meet a few wolves ourselves. And in a critical part of the interview, he debunks common misconceptions about wolves, explaining that they live in family units rather than being dominated by aggressive alpha males.
