Hedgehogs are small, brown mammals, most widely recognized for their unique spines, or quills, that provide an effective defense mechanism against danger. Commonly found in parts of Europe, Asia and Africa, hedgehogs primarily live in habitats with copious amounts of greenery and insects, like meadows, woodlands, grasslands and gardens. Hedgehogs have become remarkably adaptable, hibernating in the colder months in order to conserve energy when insects and food resources are scarce.
