Insects, the largest, most diversified group of invertebrate animals in the world, can be found in nearly every habitat and ecosystem. From the agile praying mantis to the massive Goliath beetle, to the transparent glasswing butterfly, insects continue to spark curiosity and questions amongst entomologists, educators, and students! With estimates of between five to ten million species, while insects have unique traits, they also share significant common physical characteristics, including most having six legs, three body parts (head, thorax, abdomen), wings, and antennae!

In our insect unit plan, designed specifically for elementary-aged children, students will explore the shared traits of insects and dive deeper into the world of ladybugs, grasshoppers, dragonflies, and beetles! Included are five days’ worth of comprehensive, engaging daily lesson plans, instructional materials, graphic organizers, writing prompts, comprehension questions, vocabulary activities, and more! By the end of our fascinating animal unit, students will have a deeper understanding of insect behavior, developing stronger critical thinking and writing skills through the combined lens of science and literacy!
