This week, more wolves were released in Colorado as part of an initiative to reintroduce the species to the state. The gray wolf has been endangered in the United States for many years, and recent poaching and habitat loss have further diminished their numbers. Colorado received 15 wolves from Canada, all of which were released into the central mountains. Canada already has an overpopulation of wolves, leading to the culling of some to protect caribou in the region. As a result, the nation’s surplus wolves were left unharmed and transferred to the U.S.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is monitoring the new wolf activity but also faces challenges. Opponents of the initiative, including poachers and farmers with livestock, have threatened Colorado Parks and Wildlife staff via phone and social media. The initiative has become highly controversial in the region, and tensions may rise as more wolves are reintroduced.
