Caitlyn the dog passed away Sunday after being diagnosed with cancer 10 years after making national headlines for a horrific animal abuse case. Nearly a decade ago, Caitlyn the dog endured cruelty at the hands of an animal abuser. Her abuser sealed her mouth shut with electrical tape when she arrived at Charleston Animal Society. She displayed a swollen face and black tongue, and she could not eat or drink. Animal activists across the country knew her story, opening the floor for questions about and solutions to animal abuse.

After receiving treatment, the lead prosecutor on Caitlyn’s case, Ted Covey, adopted her. From that point on, Caitlyn experienced a new, exuberant life until her death. The Covey family adored Caitlyn and was sad to see her go, considering her as much a family member as any other. Caitlyn’s family and fans will remember her legacy and continue the fight against animal cruelty.

RIP, Caitlyn. ❤️
