Walking to work isn’t something you would consider overly dangerous, but that wasn’t the case for a 71-year-old woman from Miami. The victim, Doreen Richards Broadbelt, was making her three-block journey when multiple roaming dogs attacked her, ultimately claiming her life, shocking and horrifying neighbors and family members in her community. In the days following her tragic death, Doreen’s loved ones gathered amid candlelight to celebrate her life by tracing her path to work. Despite the rain, more than 100 people showed up to offer this show of unity.
Broadbelt’s death has left a deep void, not only for her daughter but for neighbors who now worry about their own safety. Residents in the area have voiced concerns about roaming animals and the risks they pose to both children and adults. Police later confirmed that four dogs suspected in the attack were captured, but the tragedy has raised pressing questions about accountability and what more can be done to protect the community.
Fatal dog attacks in the U.S. are relatively rare but have shown a sharp increase in the last handful of years. Between 2011 and 2021, canine attacks were responsible for 468 deaths. However, fatalities have risen dramatically since 2019, climbing from 48 deaths that year to 98 in both 2022 and 2023. Adults account for the majority of victims, though children are highly vulnerable. While many breeds have been involved, statistics show pit bulls are disproportionately represented in fatal cases.
