In Australia’s smallest state, Tasmania, a massive seal has become a celebrity for his adorable expressions and destructive antics. Meet Neil the Seal, a five-year-old southern elephant seal making waves — and breaking fences — in southeast Tasmania.
While most elephant seals prefer to stay away from humans, Neil is a bit more gregarious. Since being born in 2020, he has returned to the coast of Tasmania several times a year to rest, relax, molt, and even destroy roadside infrastructure. In the process, Neil has become a true animal icon, with his antics racking up millions of views on social media. Let’s learn more about this eccentric elephant seal and how the state of Tasmania is cashing in on his status while attempting to give him the wide berth fitting for a wild animal.

Neil was born in Salem Bay in 2020, a relatively rural spot along the Tasman Peninsula. Wildlife experts believe his mother was young and inexperienced, which led her to travel over 1,500 kilometers away from the usual elephant seal colony to give birth. From the beginning, Neil was exposed to humans; wildlife officers had to rescue him as a 40-kilogram pup to prevent him from drowning.
The first signs of Neil’s comfort around humans appeared two years later, in July 2022, when he lingered in Hobart for a month-long molt. His presence attracted people who got too close, prompting officials to place traffic cones around him. However, this only encouraged Neil to play with the cones.
A year later, Neil appeared again in Hobart. This time, he basked in someone’s front yard and even blocked a woman from getting into her car. Officials from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment were forced to relocate Neil after both people and dogs harassed him at Kingston Beach.

Each year, the legend of Neil the Seal kept growing, and he seemed to want to oblige his fans. In December 2023, Neil appeared 70 miles away, in Dunalley. There, he interacted with locals and even knocked down a real estate company’s fence.
He continued to reappear on the Tasmanian coast as the years progressed. In May 2025, he was seen near Hobart. His growing celebrity, however, led to unwanted attention, so local news outlets requested that his exact location not be shared, for safety reasons. Even so, Neil’s status kept growing. Various Instagram and TikTok pages dedicated to him have racked up hundreds of thousands of followers and millions of views.

Neil’s star power grew even more when he returned to Tasmania in 2026. However, so many people approached him to take photos that Tasmania’s Department of Natural Resources warned fans to keep their distance. Neil may be accustomed to people, but he is still a large marine predator. Officials fear they will be forced to euthanize him if people cause him to lash out.
Throughout it all, Neil remains unbothered and moisturized.
