All About Grolar Bears

Grolar bears, or pizzly bears, are an extremely rare hybrid between grizzly bears and polar bears. For this hybrid to occur, most confirmed wild cases have involved a male grizzly bear mating with a female polar bear. These two different species can breed because their habitats overlap. Due to climate change, the habitat of polar bears is slowly shrinking, forcing them to spend more time on land. Grizzly bears are already terrestrial, so as the ice melts, encounters between the two species are likely to increase.

Hybrids are extremely rare, as polar bears and grizzly bears are natural competitors. Due to their overlapping habitats, they are often competing for food and resources, causing aggression. However, when conditions are just right, mating between the two can occur, specifically during breeding season. The rarity of this mating is reflected in their population numbers. Only eight hybrids have been confirmed in the wild. Genetic studies have shown that several of the known wild hybrids descend from the same female polar bear. This extremely rare pairing has resulted in a beautiful hybrid.

And Unique Traits?

Due to the extreme rarity of grolar bears, there is limited information about them. What we do know can be seen in the video above! Their fur is a blend of a polar bear’s white and a grizzly bear’s brown, with gradients of both colors throughout. Some hybrids bred in captivity have shown behaviors similar to polar bears, such as playing and posturing. Based on chromosome compatibility, it is presumed that grolar bear hybrids could be fertile, but there is no confirmed evidence that they have reproduced with either parent species. While beautiful, this mix of traits can create disadvantages. Because they have mixed traits, their lack of specialization for either water or land makes it difficult for them to thrive in a single environment. This makes grolar bears especially unique and a rare sight in the wild.
