If you’re visiting Texas, Austin is one stop you can’t miss. The capital city boasts a hip live music scene and tech hub status. It’s also an outdoor lover’s paradise. With an active water recreation scene, it’s natural to wonder: are there alligators in Austin?
The Colorado River is the place to be in Austin. Note: this is not the same Colorado River that flows through Arizona, California, and several other states! The river begins in northwest Texas and flows through downtown Austin. Accordingly, it’s a favorite spot for local kayakers and paddleboarders.
Humans share the waters of Austin with several species of birds, fish, and mammals. But what about large reptiles?

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department estimates between 400,000 to 500,000 alligators live in the state. Despite this, they’re not usually found in the Austin area. Alligators like to live in wetland areas, like marshes and swamps. Those environments are more common in East Texas and along the Gulf Coast.Â
Austin is in Central Texas. That’s on the outskirts of an alligator’s typical habitat range. Still, seeing an alligator in Austin isn’t impossible. One was found in an Austin ditch this year. If alligators are in Austin, it’s likely because of displacement by a flood or illegally released.Â

If you come across an alligator in the wild, do not approach or antagonize the reptile. Make sure to report the encounter to local wildlife authorities immediately. Alligators fear humans and rarely chase them. If you encounter an alligator unexpectedly, it’s important to exercise caution.
