Boston terriers and Pit bulls are both good companions to have with great personalities. In regards to temperament, both breeds are pretty similar requiring training and lots of attention. Both breeds are social, playful, and can be stubborn at times. Both breeds originate from America. Throughout history, Pit bulls and Boston terriers were bred for fighting entertainment. Because of this, Pit bulls are deemed dangerous due to their powerful “lock-jaw” technique to fight off their opponents. Boston terriers and Pit bulls tend to have short hair coats; therefore, require very minimal grooming. They have some similarities, but what makes them different? This post will highlight their distinctive differences in appearance and health factors.

Weight

An ideal size Boston terrier usually weighs between 12-25 lbs, whereas an ideal-sized Pitbull will weigh between 30-65 lbs.

Color

Boston terriers are known for their tuxedo appearance. They are generally black and white, but can also be brindle or seal. Pit bulls on the other hand can range in various colors, such as black, white, or brindle. Depending on genetics, some may come with spots or various patterns.

Health / Lifespan

On average Boston terriers can live between 11-13 years of age and Pit bulls can live between 8-15 years of age. Genetics, lifestyle, and health can play a part in the general lifespan of both breeds. Health concerns: Compared to the Boston terrier, Pit bulls tend to have fewer health concerns that can be managed.

Health Concerns

Pit bull health concerns:

  • Allergies: Pit bulls are susceptible to developing environmental or food allergies. Good nutrient or allergy testing can help with maintaining or treating allergies.
  • ACL tears: An ACL ( anterior cruciate injury) is the over-stretching or tearing of the ligament in the knee. An ACL tear can be partial or complete. In most cases, Pit bulls tend to have this injury in both knees and need surgery.
  • Hip dysplasia: A condition that can be developed as Pit bulls get older and lose laxity of the hip joint. Hip dysplasia can be difficult to maintain because of the high energy Pit bulls have.

Boston terrier health concerns:

  • Brachycephalic syndrome: Brachycephalic syndrome is the anatomic abnormality of the soft palate, tonsils, and nasal passageway. The syndrome results in upper airway obstruction causing the “snorting” like noise you may hear as the breed breathes or sleeps.
  • Eye issues: Glaucoma, cataracts, corneal ulcer, KCS (Keratoconjunctivitis) also known as dry eye.
  • Patellar luxation: The movement of the patella or kneecap, surgical intervention is usually needed if it causes issues for the pet.
