The largest spider in Arizona is the Arizona blond tarantula. Their large hairy bodies can get to be 3-4 inches long and their leg span can be 6 inches. As a heavy-bodied spider, they are also some of the heaviest spiders at 1-3 ounces. They live in the desert and can be found burrowing in the soil creating some tunnels that are 2 inches wide. They both hunt for food and catch prey in a web. Not a typical spider web you find in your cellar, but a web spun across the entrance of their burrow. If they don’t get a Door Dashed meal in their web, they go out and actively hunt for prey at night. Arizona blond tarantulas eat insects, beetles, grasshoppers and caterpillars.

The Arizona blond tarantula can be found in most counties in the state. They are adaptable and can live off insects and small invertebrates in the area. Their preferred habitat is burrowing in the soil of the deserts like the Mojave and Sonoran deserts.

When can you see the most spiders?

In the fall, male tarantulas come out of their burrows in search of a mate. They can search in any direction and some travel quite far to find the right mate. It takes a male tarantula 10 years before he is ready to mate, and with a life span of 10-12 years mating is one of the last things they do before they die. Females, on the other hand, are known to live up to 30 years. Talk about putting all your eggs in one basket, a male tarantula can “father” up to 1,000 eggs per female, and they will sometimes mate with more than one female. The females wait until spring to lay the egg sac when the spiderlings will hatch.

How big are baby Arizona blond tarantulas?

Baby tarantulas start out at about .25 inches (6 mm). They look surprisingly like their adult counterpart, hairy legs and all. Hundreds of them can hatch at the same time and scurry about searching for their first meal. Although hundreds may hatch only a few make it to adulthood.

Are the largest spiders dangerous?

Tarantulas can bite, but their venom is not harmful to humans. It would result in a painful bite and swelling, but should not cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or muscle weakness, like a black widow bite. Tarantulas also have coarse hairs that they use to subdue prey, these hairs can cause irritation if you have contact with a tarantula.
