Cryptozoology is considered pseudoscience, but for some, it is just as serious as the real thing. People who study cryptozoology are called cryptozoologists. This group of people predominately devote themselves to the research of unknown, legendary, or seemingly extinct animals. This is especially true for animals whose existence is either disputed or not fully supported by modern-day science. While many argue over the validity of cryptids in our real-life world, hundreds of these elusive creatures serve as main characters in many famous urban legends and stories. One such creature is the squonk, which is one of the rarest cryptids you might ever hear about! With that being said, let’s explore the hidden world of the squonk and learn all there is to know about Pennsylvania’s most introverted creature.

Origin of the Squonk

Pennsylvania serves as the original birthplace of the squonk. Nevertheless, sightings and stories involving this creature can be found all throughout the nation.

The legend of the squonk is said to have originated in the late 19th or early 20th century. It gained popularity among hunters and outdoors enthusiasts who shared tales of encounters with these creatures in the Pennsylvania wilderness. Over time, the legend spread beyond the state’s borders and became a subject of fascination for cryptozoologists and fans of the paranormal. Today, the squonk even has a famous crossover story with the woodland hero Paul Bunyan!

For further background, the squonk is primarily associated with the heavily wooded forests of Pennsylvania. Beyond that, this crpytid is often linked to the hemlock forests found in the northeastern region of the United States. It is widely believed that this creature thrives in these areas because of the dense coverage and seclusion they provide. While encounters with the squonk are rare, the legends surrounding this North American cryptid have become deeply ingrained in the culture of Pennsylvania and its surrounding states.

If you are ever lucky enough to spot a squonk in the wild, it’s likely you will never forget it! That is mainly because this cryptid has one of the most eye-catching, unusual appearances out of all the North American cryptids. Cryptozoologists predominately refer to the squonk as being visually similar to pigs or hogs. This creature is most widely known for one main distinctive feature: its loose, sagging, and severely wrinkled skin. Many people believe that the squonk’s body is covered entirely in warts, acne, and other blemishes. Other eyewitness accounts claim the squonk has sporadic patches of hair covering its body and scaley, eczema-ridden flesh. Yikes!

Local Pennsylvania lore explains that the squonk is a very insecure creature. So much so that it hides away in the deepest parts of the forest to conceal its “ugliness” from the world! Its appearance is said to be so grotesque and horribly deformed that it spends its entire lifetime crying — wallowing in self-pity, self-hatred, and disgust! Having said that, the squonk is often portrayed in stories as a depressed, self-loathing creature that leaves behind streams of tears wherever it goes.

Interestingly enough, this pig-like creature is also so sensitive to scrutiny that it cannot bear to even be looked at. If, by chance, a squonk is spotted by someone, the creature’s natural instinct is to disintegrate. Or more specifically, “melt away into a puddle of its own tears,” as the legends describe. Though there has yet to be any definitive proof of their existence, many argue their intense insecurity is reason enough to explain why they are so hard to find in the wild.

Folklore of Pennsylvania’s Squonk

One of the most memorable stories of the squonk involves one pitiful cryptid, one determiend hunter, and one vital rucksack. Though there is some variation between stories, they all generally go as follows. One day, a lone man was out on a hunt to score some game animals. Nearing the end of the day, he started heading back to his vehicle empty-handed. Then he saw it — a squonk! At the time, the hunter did not know what exactly it was that he saw. In a frantic surge of terror and embarrassment, the pig-like creature tried to escape. But alas, the skilled hunter was too fast and too swift to evade. He managed to scoop the poor squonk up and toss him right into his empty rucksack!

Equally excited and horrified, the hunter made his way back to the car — listening only to the soft sobs of the squonk and the crunch of leaves under his boots. When he was about halfway there, the man realized the bag felt suspiciously light and decided to check on his prized catch. To his surprise, there was nothing inside! Seeing no holes, tears, or rips, he was confused as to where this creature went and why the rutsack was soaking wet. To his bewilderment, the hunter conjured up the only plausible explanation. The creature wept itself into a puddle and seeped right through the rucksack! In doing this, the squonk was able to escape capture (and judgement).

In similar stories, numerous other hunters have claimed to have captured squonks using hunting snares, backpacks, or even large nets. The problem is that this cryptid disintegrates into a pool of tears and bubbles when touched, scared, or captured!

Conclusion

The legend of the squonk continues to captivate people worldwide, especially sparking the attention of those who dare venture into Pennsylvania’s deep forests. Whether a mere figment of imagination or a true creature hiding in the shadows, the squonk remains an enigma to many, adding to the allure of cryptids and the mysteries that surround them!
