When you consider endangered animal populations, you probably think of habitat loss. Sometimes, hunting is the issue. Pollution could also gravely affect wild animal populations. But with domesticated dogs, the reasons for their endangered populations vary.

Sometimes a dog was bred for a specific purpose and it was no longer needed for that purpose. Those who love the breeds have been diligent with breeding but without widespread demand, these types of dogs may just go extinct. Discover 11 of these endangered dog breeds!

1. Sussex Spaniel

The Sussex spaniel is an adoring sporting dog with an even-keeled temperament. Although this dog’s face appears to say otherwise, these pups are quite cheerful. World War II almost saw an end to this rare breed (they had dwindled down to only five pups!).

2. Bloodhound

In 2021, only 19 bloodhounds were registered with the American Kennel Club. They’re a rare breed that has been considered endangered for over 10 years. These pups are affectionate and vocal, bred to do one thing exceptionally well: find missing people.

3. Otterhound

The otterhound was impacted by the banning of otter hunting, which occurred in 1978 in the UK. These pups were bred after the ban, but only by the enthusiasts who love the breed. They have water-resistant coats, webbed feet, and incredible scenting powers.

4. German Pinscher

The German pinscher is an ultra-affectionate dog that doesn’t drool nearly as much as some other breeds. They have smooth, short coats in black, fawn, and red. The American Kennel Club describes them as “super-intelligent, eye-catching, sleek, shiny, and streamlined.”

5. Scottish Deerhound

This dignified dog is on the larger side, growing to weigh up to 110 pounds if male and 95 pounds if female. They are a polite breed with a gentle spirit. They’re loving with their family and get along with other dogs, though their massive presence may be a little intimidating at first.

6. Irish Wolfhound

The Irish wolfhound is a calm and courageous dog. Their coat colors vary. Sometimes they’re solid-colored but there are some mixed coat colors like red and brindle as well. At one point, these dogs were used for hunting big game but they’ve become known for their amiable nature.

7. Skye Terrier

This good-tempered pup is known for its affectionate and courageous nature. These are small dogs that have a life of expectancy of up to 14 years. Their coats may be any one of several colors, including black, blue, cream, fawn, gray, platinum, and silver.

8. Dandie Dinmont Terrier

The Dandie Dinmont terrier is a small dog with a life expectancy of 12 to 15 years. These pups are open to strangers, and view everyone as a potential friend. However, they’re also vigilant, never hesitating to protect their families. They can’t do damage in the way a larger dog may be able to, but they’ll alert you if there’s something amiss.

9. Chinook

These dogs are devoted, intelligent, and patient. They weigh up to 90 pounds if male and 65 pounds if female. They’re affectionate and do well with other dogs. These are working pups that are eager to please their owners.

10. Smooth Collie

The smooth collie is a graceful dog with a life expectancy of up to 14 years. These devoted pups are great with children. They are the sleek versions of the more well-known, full-coated collie.

The Glen of Imaal terrier is a bold yet gentle dog that knows how to love well. These pups are blue brindle or wheaten and are no strangers to hard work. Their personalities are bold and brave.
