Quick Take

Steve Jenkins thought he was bringing home a tiny “micro pig.” What he actually brought home would eventually weigh about 600 pounds.

Esther arrived as a tiny piglet in 2012 and seemed small enough to fit right into the household Steve shared with his partner, Derek Walter, and their other pets. Then she started growing. And growing. It eventually became obvious that Esther was not going to remain miniature at all.

Watch Esther’s Incredible Transformation

The transformation is hard to believe when you see just how small Esther started. Before long, the little piglet sharing space with the family’s dogs had become a full-sized commercial sow.

She did not lose her house-pig personality along the way. Esther still wanted attention, food, naps, and time with the rest of the family. The only problem was that everything now had to accommodate a pig weighing several hundred pounds.

The “Micro Pig” Surprise Was Very Real

A tiny piglet can grow dramatically during its first few years of life.

Esther’s story highlights one of the biggest problems with animals marketed as “micro,” “teacup,” or miniature pigs. Those labels can give prospective owners the impression that a pig will stay extremely small throughout its life.

In reality, even genuinely smaller domestic pigs can become much larger than someone might expect from seeing them as piglets. Animal welfare organizations warn prospective owners to research adult size, housing, diet, veterinary care, local laws, and the long-term commitment involved before bringing a pet pig home.

Esther Was Definitely Not a Mini Pig

Esther’s case was more extreme because she turned out to be a commercially bred pig rather than the tiny companion animal Steve believed he was adopting. According to Esther’s official story, she weighed only about four pounds when she entered the family.

Within a few years, she had reached roughly 600 pounds. That is not just a slightly oversized pet pig. It is the kind of weight associated with a fully grown commercial sow, which meant Steve and Derek had to rethink nearly everything about how and where Esther could live.

One Pig Ended Up Changing Their Entire Lives

What began as an unexpectedly enormous pet eventually turned into something much bigger. As Esther grew, so did her online following. Steve and Derek began sharing her life with people around the world, and Esther became known as “Esther the Wonder Pig.”

In 2014, they founded Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary in Ontario, creating a home for rescued farm animals and building an animal-welfare project around the pig who had unexpectedly taken over their lives.

Esther died in October 2023, but her story remains remarkable. Steve thought he was agreeing to take care of one tiny piglet. Instead, that four-pound arrival became a 600-pound internet celebrity and changed the direction of an entire family.
