Millions of American bison once roamed North America’s grasslands before hunting and habitat loss pushed them dangerously close to extinction. Today, these massive animals are making a comeback, with herds living in national parks, conservation areas, and privately managed ranches across the country.
In this A-Z Animals video, we explore the U.S. states with the largest bison populations, where these iconic animals can still be found, and how conservation efforts have helped bring them back from the brink. We also look at the important distinction between wild, conservation-managed, and privately raised bison—and why their recovery is still a work in progress.
