Cats and their toe beans have taken over the internet for their cuteness. It’s hard to browse the internet without seeing a cute video featuring a cat’s adorable paws and their toe beans. But did you know that other creatures have toe beans as well, such as tarantulas? This Instagram post by @slugonaslope shows a tarantula’s toe beans up close, and they are cuter than you might think. Tarantula Toe Beans

Thanks to the post above, tarantula toe beans have gone viral online. Their toe beans look similar to the pads on cats’ paws, just on a much smaller scale. Many spiders have claws at the end of their legs that they use for moving and hunting, but these claws are separated from the leg by the toe pads. From the pad, spiders can move their claws to some extent, but unlike cats, their claws are not sheathed and cannot be fully retracted or extended.

One difference from cats is that not all spiders have toe beans. In spiders, toe beans—and more specifically, claws—serve different purposes. In web-building spiders, the pads are smaller or less pronounced than those of non-web-building spiders. Tarantulas are famous for their large size, which makes their toe pads more visible and photogenic compared to those of smaller spiders.

While the pads on a spider’s legs may look adorable, they also serve several practical purposes. For starters, they help spiders climb, especially when adhering to surfaces that are not parallel to the ground. The hairy pads help with adhesion, while the claws can dig into the surface they are on.

Good traction is important, especially for web-building spiders, as they need to climb through their own webs without getting stuck. Hairy toe pads and sharp claws are perfect for this. One important function of toe pads is to enable quick movement. For hunting spider species, chasing prey can be challenging. Toe pads help with mobility and agility, making these spiders effective hunters. So, while spiders’ toe pads are just as cute as a cat’s, they also serve an important purpose.
